UALR Wins First Contest over Louisiana Tech 70-60

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.?For the first time in school history, the UALR women's basketball team defeated Louisiana Tech 70-60 Thursday at the Jack Stephens Center.  The Trojans improve to 7-3 overall and extend their home winning streak to 11.

 

“I think both teams played well, and it is something to be proud of,” said head coach Joe Foley.  “Tonight I thought we grew up a little bit.  We made some plays when we needed to.  I thought our defense was solid.”

 

Sophomore Anshel Cooper recorded a season high of 27 points going 10-of-17 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the line, while senior Andrea Keys recorded 12 points and nine rebounds.

 

Sophomore Kim Sitzmann knocked down 12 points and recorded six assists, while freshman Asriel Rolfe led the team in assists with seven.

 

Freshman Chastity Reed recorded team highs of ten rebounds and six steals while scoring six points.

 

The Trojans scored the first field goal on a jumper by Keys, before Louisiana Tech (4-7) scored with a three-point play by Tarkeisha Wysinger.

 

Louisiana Tech out scored UALR eight to four over the next three minutes to take an 11-6 advantage.

 

A jumper by Keys from Sitzmann at the 13:17 mark sparked an 8-2 run to put the Trojans back on top 14-13.

 

After a Lady Techsters basket, UALR scored six straight points including four from Cooper to take a five point advantage.

 

With 6:09 until the half, LTU knocked down five unanswered points including a three-point play by Wysinger to tie the score at 20.

 

After a three-pointer by Sitzmann, Sierra Nixon scored four points to give the Lady Techsters a 24-23 lead.

 

Both teams exchanged free throws, before Sidney Stewart scored a three-pointer for the two point La Tech advantage.

 

Over the last minute and a half, the Trojans scored six straight points on jumpers by Sitzmann, Keys, and Reed to give UALR a 33-29 half-time lead.

 

Cooper opened the second half with a jumper followed by four more points to La Tech's three to expand the Trojan lead to 39-32.

 

UALR out scored the Lady Techsters seven to three over the next two minutes including a three-pointer by Hughes.

 

La Tech went on an 8-0 run at the 13:26 mark to cut the UALR lead to three, before Cooper knocked down two free throws to bring the score to 48-43.

 

After Cooper scored four straight points for UALR, the Lady Techsters combined for six unanswered points to cut into the lead 52-49.

 

Both teams knocked down baskets with La Tech cutting the Trojan lead to two with 3:09 remaining.

 

Over the remaining three minutes, UALR scored 11 points and held Louisiana Tech to just three to win 70-60.

 

UALR continues conference action on Saturday as they host Florida International.  Game is set for 7 p.m. at the Jack Stephens Center.
