LITTLE ROCK, Ark.?After losing to Central Arkansas 2-3 last week, the UALR volleyball team gave the Sugar Bears their first loss this season with a 3-0 victory Tuesday at the Jack Stephens Center. The Trojans improve to 7-4 for the season.
“We lost a tough match to UCA last week,” said head coach Van Compton. “I thought our players showed a lot of character to come out and beat UCA in three games. UCA is a very, very good team, and for us to beat them in three games was very encouraging.”
Anita Bucur led the team for the first time in her career in kills with 18, while Amila Barakovic recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and ten digs.
Amy Hafner led the team in digs with 17, while Lenka Melicharkova recorded a team high 45 assists.
In game one, UALR jumped to an early 2-0 lead on a kill by Bucur and an attack error by UCA. The Sugar Bears charged back and tied the score at two on two attack errors by the Trojans.
The score would tie once more before UALR took the lead and sustained it. With the score 5-4, the Trojans knocked down three straight points to further their advantage.
UALR allowed UCA to score only 19 points and won the game on a kill by Barakovic.
The Trojans jumped to a 2-0 lead in game two on Sugar Bear errors. The score would tie once, but UALR kept the lead the rest of the match scoring as many as three consecutive points.
A kill by Bucur sealed the game two victory.
UCA took the first two points in game three on attack errors by UALR. The score tied seven times throughout the match and the lead changed once with UALR keeping the edge.
The Sugar Bears tied the score at 28 on an attack error by the Trojans. A ball handling error by UCA put UALR at match point.
An attack error by the Sugar Bears won the match for the Trojans.
UALR continues action tomorrow as they host Oral Roberts. Match is set for 6 p.m.
