UALR Defeats Oral Roberts in Five

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.?For the first time since 2003, the UALR volleyball team defeated Oral Roberts 3-2 (30-26, 19-30, 30-24, 23-30, 15-13) Wednesday at the Jack Stephens Center.  This was the first five game win of the season for the Trojans as they improve to 8-4 overall heading into conference action next week.

 

“It was a great win for us,” said head coach Van Compton.  “This team won their conference last season and went to the NCAA tournament.  They are a very good team.  The match was up and down, but I felt that we played really well in the fifth game when it counted.”

 

Amila Barakovic recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a team high of 13 kills and 11 digs, while Melissa Soares tied her career high with 12 kills.

 

Ivanka Davidova knocked down nine kills and set her career high in block solos with four, and Lenka Melicharkova recorded her seventh double-double with a team high of 42 assists and ten digs.

 

Amy Hafner led the team in digs with 22, while Courtney Hays recorded 11 digs.

 

ORU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one, before UALR tied the score on a kill by Barakovic.  The score would tie seven times throughout the match with the Golden Eagles holding the advantage.

 

With the score tied at 17, UALR scored five straight points including two service aces by Ivanka Davidova to take a 22-17 lead.

 

UALR held the lead and won on a service ace by Soares.

 

The score tied twice to start game two, before ORU took the lead and sustained it. 

 

The Golden Eagles allowed only 19 total UALR points and won the game on a service error by the Trojans.

 

In game three, UALR fell behind at the beginning of the match but tied the score three times. 

 

With the score 18 all, UALR gained their first lead of the match and held ORU to six points.  The Trojans won the game on an attack error by the Golden Eagles.

 

The score tied four times in game four, but ORU held the lead throughout the match.  The Golden Eagles had as many as a six point lead, before UALR pushed points.

 

With the score 28-22 in ORU's favor, the Trojans scored on an attack error by the Golden Eagles.  ORU finished the game with kills by Danijela Novakovic and Joanita Souza.

 

In the final game, both teams traded points with the score tying three times, before the Trojans took a 4-3 lead on a kill by Soares.

 

The Golden Eagles kept attacking tying the score at six and seven, before UALR knocked down three straight points on three ORU errors.

 

After a UALR service error, the Trojans scored three more straight points for the 12-9 advantage.

 

ORU pushed points and came within one point on a UALR attack error, but the Trojans won the match on an attack error by the Golden Eagles.

 

UALR starts conference action on Friday September 21 as they travel to Denton, Texas to face North Texas.  Match is set for 7 p.m.
