Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark.?Senior Nikya Hughes and sophomore Kim Sitzmann combined for 43 of the UALR women's basketball team's points as the Trojans defeated Florida Atlantic 66-44 Sunday at the Jack Stephens Center. For the first time in school history, the Trojans have won six in a row.
“We had to go to those two guys (Hughes and Sitzmann),” said head coach Joe Foley. “We tried to put them in the right spots to make shots. I thought they did a really good job. Defensively, I thought we did a good job.”
Hughes led all scorers with 22 points and led the team in steals with four, while Sitzmann contributed 21 points including four three-pointers.
Freshman Asriel Rolfe led the team in rebounds with seven and in assists with five, while freshman Chastity Reed contributed six rebounds.
UALR (15-5, 7-2 SBC) opened the game on a 12-0 run sparked by a three-pointer by Sitzmann with Hughes scoring seven of the points.
Florida Atlantic (4-14, 0-9 SBC) scored their first point on a free throw by Carla Stubbs with 14:50 on the clock.
Over the next five minutes, both teams knocked down six points, before Sitzmann knocked down a three-pointer to bring the score to 19-7 with 11:05 until the half.
After two jumpers by Breana Cox for FAU, the Trojans went on a 6-2 run including three points by Hughes to extend their advantage back to 25-13.
Hughes knocked down two jumpers, before the Owls scored on a jumper by Mercedes Thompson.
In the remaining 1:31, FAU out scored UALR 4-2 bringing the half-time score to 31-19 in the Trojans' favor.
Florida Atlantic opened the second half with a jumper by Jaimie Givens followed by two free throws by Anshel Cooper for UALR.
After a jumper by Thompson for FAU, Sitzmann knocked down eight straight points including back-to-back three-pointers to give UALR the 41-23 advantage.
Over the next five minutes, UALR out scored the Owls six to four including four points by Sitzmann to take a 20 point lead.
After both team exchanged baskets, the Owls knocked down four straight points to bring the score to 50-33, before Hughes scored four unanswered points for UALR.
UALR went on a 6-3 run over the next two minutes including a three-pointer by Rolfe, before Givens knocked down a three-pointer for FAU to bring the score to 59-39 with 3:48 remaining.
The Trojans kept their lead throughout the remaining two minutes allowing just five points while scoring seven to win 66-44.
UALR continues conference action on Wednesday as they travel to Bowling Green, Ky. to face Western Kentucky. Game is set for 7 p.m.
