UALR Loses Fifth Set Battle to Arkansas State

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.?After being down 2-1, the UALR volleyball team fought back to play a fifth set but lost 2-3 (25-21, 22-25, 13-25, 25-20, 13-15) Tuesday at the Jack Stephens Center.  The Trojans fall to 20-6 overall and 9-4 in the Sun Belt Conference.

 

Three Trojans scored in double-figures with Anita Bucur leading the team with 15 kills.  Amila Barakovic contributed 13 kills, while Becky Mann knocked down 11.

 

Barakovic also recorded a double-double with a team high of 15 digs, while Guiliana De Francesco recorded a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs. 

 

Amy Hafner recorded a team high of 15 digs.  Katie McCutcheon and Lora Dickey each recorded a team high of eight blocks.

 

In the first set, Arkansas State (20-7, 9-4 SBC) jumped to a 1-0 lead, before the Trojans knocked down their first point on a kill by Bucur.  After a point by ASU, the Trojans knocked down five straight points to gain a 5-2 advantage.

 

UALR kept their lead holding the Red Wolves to 21 points and scoring the last two points on a kill by Bucur and an ASU error.

 

In set two, the Trojans opened the set on a kill by Barakovic, before Christin Baker knocked down a kill for ASU.  UALR regained their advantage scoring two points on a kill by Bucur and a bad set by the Red Wolves.

 

ASU pushed points tying the score at 15 on a kill by Laura Bennett.  The score tied four times, before the Red Wolves took a two point lead.

 

The Trojans came within one, but ASU scored the last three points winning the set 25-22.

 

UALR knocked down only seven kills in the third set recording a -.026 percentage.  The Red Wolves opened on a 3-0 run and kept the momentum limiting the Trojans to just 13 points and winning on a kill by Heather Bowman.

 

In the fourth set, UALR opened with a kill by McCutcheon, before ASU tied the score.  The Trojans knocked down three straight points to take the 4-1 advantage.

 

Arkansas State pushed points tying the score seven times.  With the score tied at 13, UALR knocked down three straight points on two kills by Bucur and an ASU error.

 

UALR sustained their advantage holding the Red Wolves to 20 points and winning on an ASU error.

 

In the final set, Arkansas State opened to a 3-0 lead, before an ASU error put the first point on the board for the Trojans.

 

UALR pushed points and tied the score three times, before the Red Wolves regained the lead on a kill by Mandy DeWalt.

 

The Trojans tied the score at 13 on a kill by De Francesco, before ASU knocked down two straight points to win the match.

 

UALR continues conference action on Friday as they host North Texas.  Match is set for 7 p.m.
