Last Second Shot Lifts Trojans over Grambling State 61-60

GRAMBLING, La.?A last second layup by Channon Haywood lifted the UALR women's basketball team to their first road victory 61-60 Tuesday at the Assembly Center.  The Trojans improve to 3-1 on the season.

 

Anshel Cooper led all scorers with 21 points, while Chastity Reed knocked down 15 points and recorded a team high of five rebounds.

 

After UALR won the tip, Reed opened the first half with a layup and one followed by a jumper to give the Trojans a 5-0 lead.

 

After a free throw by Cooper, Grambling State knocked down their first field goal of the game on a jumper by Gabrielle Fleming a the 14:17 mark.

 

Over the next minute and a half, the Tigers out scored the Trojans six to two to cut the Trojan lead to 8-6 with 12:33 until the half. 

 

Both teams exchanged points with UALR holding the one point advantage.  With 8:43 on the clock, GSU took their first advantage of the game 14-13 on a jumper by Wymeka Randle.

 

At the 7:06 mark, Kourtney Sherman knocked down two free throws to spark an eight to three run by the Tigers will all points coming from Sherman to hold the 22-18 lead.

 

With 3:26 until the half, Cooper knocked down back-to-back jumpers to spark an 8-2 run to go into the half with a 26-24 lead.

 

A jumper by Haywood started the Trojans in the second half on a 9-0 run.  GSU scored their first points at the 17:43 mark on a layup by Whitney Brown.

 

Over the next six minutes, the Tigers out scored the Trojans nine to eight to cut the UALR lead to 43-35.  With 10:15 on the clock, Krystal Huggins knocked down a jumper to spark a 9-0 run by the Tigers to regain a 44-43 lead.

 

Cooper scored the Trojans first field goal in two minutes to put UALR up by one. Over the next two minutes, both teams exchanged points and leads with each leading by one.

 

With 6:07 on the clock, GSU scored six straight points to extend their lead 54-49.  After a steal and fast break by Reed, Kristen Harper knocked down a three to give the Tigers their biggest lead at six.

 

Two free throws by Asriel Rolfe followed by buckets by Cooper and Reed tied the score at 57 with 1:51 in the game.  A steal and fast break layup by Sitzmann regained a 59-57 Trojan lead with 52 seconds on the clock.

 

Randle knocked down a free throw but missed the second with 28.2 left, but the Trojans turned the ball over with 14.9 on the clock.  A jumper by Harper gave the Tigers a 60-59 lead.

 

With one second on the clock, Haywood knocked down a layup from Reed to win the game 61-60.

 

UALR continues non-conference action on Saturday as they host Rice.  The double-header is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Jack Stephens Center.
