Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark.?Sophomore Chastity Reed recorded her third double-double of the season with career highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the UALR women's basketball team to their second straight win with a 56-53 victory over Rice Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center. The Trojans improve to 4-1 on the season.
“I thought we played a great second half,” said head coach Joe Foley. “I thought we kept our composure down the stretch."
Reed also recorded team highs of five assists and three blocks.
Anshel Cooper recorded her fifth straight double-digit scoring game with 12 points, while Asriel Rolfe knocked down eight points.
Rice opened the first half on a 5-0 run including an opening three-pointer by Tara Watts. The Trojans scored their first field goal at the 17:34 mark on a layup by Reed.
Over the next three minutes, UALR and Rice each score six points with the Owls holding an 11-8 advantage.
Both teams exchanged points, before a jumper by Marian Kursh and two free throws by Whitney Burgess tied the score at 14 with 10:01 until the half.
The Trojans tied the score three times, before a three-pointer by D'Frantz Smart gave the Owls a 23-20 lead with 4:41 on the clock.
UALR stayed within three points of the lead, until 59.4 seconds when a layup and one by Smart and a free throw by Megan Elliott put the Owls up 31-24 going into the half.
The Trojans opened the second half with a 4-0 run on a jumper by Cooper and a steal and fast break layup by Kim Sitzmann.
Over the next three minutes, the Owls out scored UALR six to four including a three-pointer by Brianna Hypolite bringing the score to 37-23 in Rice's favor.
With 13:29 remaining, Reed knocked down a jumper to spark a 10-0 run by the Trojans to take their first lead of the game.
After two three throws by Frantz for Rice, UALR knocked down four straight points to extend their lead to 46-39.
Both teams exchanged points with UALR holding the advantage. A three-pointer by Frantz with 3:43 remaining brought the Owls within six, but Reed scored on a layup to extend the Trojan lead back to 54-46.
A three-pointer by Maudess Fulton for Rice followed by free throws by Rolfe brought the score to 56-49 with 1:34 remaining and UALR holding the lead.
Back-to-back points by the Owls narrowed the lead to three with 39 seconds remaining. The Trojans held on to win 56-53.
UALR continues basketball action on Wednesday when they host Southern Mississippi. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
