Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark.?For the first time in school history, the UALR women's basketball team defeated a Top 25 team winning 65-51 over No. 19/17 Oklahoma State Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center. The Trojans recorded a 50.9 field goal percentage and held Oklahoma State to their lowest scoring game of the season.
“The last three games we have started to get in a rhythm,” said head coach Joe Foley. “Our kids have grown up a lot the last three games. This is the biggest win at home by far.”
Three Trojans scored in double figures with Chastity Reed leading all scorers with 18 points. Anshel Cooper and Kim Sitzmann each contributed 13 points. Reed also led the team in rebounds with six.
UALR held preseason All-American Andrea Riley to season lows in points with 15 and in assists with four. She also recorded a season high seven turnovers.
Oklahoma State opened the first half with a layup, but the Trojans answered back with a jumper by Rolfe to tie the score. Both teams scored, before a three-pointer by Tegan Cunningham gave the Cowgirls a 7-4 advantage.
The Trojans scored five straight points on a jumper by Reed and a three-pointer by Sitzmann to take their first lead of the game at the 16:15 mark. Four consecutive points by OSU allowed the Cowgirls to regain the lead.
Over the next three minutes, UALR out scored OSU seven to two to bring the score to 16-13 in the Trojans' favor.
With 7:39 until the half, Andrea Riley knocked down six straight points to regain a 21-20 lead for the Cowgirls. UALR answered back with four consecutive points by Kursh and a fast break layup from Haywood to take a 26-21 lead.
Before halftime, both teams knocked down points bringing the score to 28-23 in favor of UALR.
The Trojans opened the second half on 7-0 run with four points coming from Reed and a three-pointer by Rolfe to extend their lead to 35-23. The Cowgirls scored their first points at the 16:20 mark on free throws by Riley.
Both teams exchanged points over the next minute with UALR keeping the edge. At the 14:52 mark, a jumper by Reed sparked a 4-0 run to bring their lead to 15.
With 12:38 on the clock, OSU recorded six straight points to narrow the UALR lead to nine. After both teams knocked down baskets, Riley recorded a three-pointer with 9:51 remaining to bring the score to 48-40 in UALR's favor.
With 4:49 on the clock, Sitzmann knocked down a three-pointer to extend the advantage to 55-44. After an OSU layup, the Trojans scored six straight points including four from Cooper to bring the score to 59-46.
Over the remaining 2:21, the Trojans held OSU to five points while knocking down six to win 65-51.
UALR continues basketball action on Tuesday as they host Tulsa. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
