Box Score 2 CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas?The UALR volleyball team finished the Islander Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Invitational with wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 33-31) and Texas Southern 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-15) Saturday. The Trojans finished the invitational 2-1 and are now 5-1 overall.
In the match against TAMCC, Amila Barakovic led the team in kills with 15, while Amy Hafner led the team in digs with ten. Katie McCutcheon led the team in blocks with seven including six block assists.
In the first set, TAMCC scored the first point on a kill by Kasey McBrearty. UALR answered back with two straight points on Islander attack errors.
The score tied three times, before TAMCC took the lead. The Trojans pushed points tying the score at 15.
UALR held the Islanders to 17 points including knocking down seven straight points at the end of the set for the win.
The Trojans opened the second set with three straight points on a kill by Barakovic and two Islander attack errors.
TAMCC tied the score twice, but UALR kept the advantage. The Trojans won the set on an Islander attack error.
In set three, both teams held the lead throughout the set. With the score 24-23, the Trojans tied the score on a kill by Melissa Soares.
The score would tie seven more times, before UALR scored the final two points on kills by Beck Mann and McCutcheon.
In the match against Texas Southern, Anita Bucur led the team in kills with nine, while Hafner led the team in digs with 12. McCutcheon recorded six block assists.
The Trojans jumped to a 2-0 lead in set one on a service ace by Guiliana De Francesco and a Texas Southern attack error.
After the Tigers scored a point, UALR knocked down eight straight points to take the 10-1 advantage.
The Trojans held the Tigers to just 11 points and won the set on a kill by Bucur.
Texas Southern opened the second set with a kill by Emma Obi. The Trojans answered back with a point on a Tiger service error.
The score tied three times, before a kill by Mann gave UALR the advantage. The Trojans held the Tigers to 13 points and won the set on a kill by Bucur.
In the third set, the score tied twice, before the Trojans took the lead on a Tiger error. UALR held Texas Southern to 11 points, scoring as many as seven in a row, and won the set on a Tiger attack error.
UALR continues action next week as they compete in the T.J. Sales/Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational hosted by Missouri State. The Trojans face Alcorn State on Friday at 5 p.m. and IPFW at 10 a.m. and Missouri State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
