LITTLE
ROCK, Ark.—The UALR women's basketball team finished the Preseason
WNIT with a 64-40 win over UTEP Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center. The Trojans improve to 2-1 on the season.
“I thought we did an excellent job defensively,” said
head coach Joe Foley. “They are a very good shooting ball
club. I thought we took them out of
that.”
For the third-straight game, Chastity Reed recorded a double-double leading the team with 24
points and 12 rebounds. Britteni Williams recorded a
career-high with ten points and also contributed five rebounds.
UTEP
opened the game with a three-pointer by Timika Williams at the 19:30 mark,
before Reed scored six straight points to give UALR the advantage.
The
Trojans recorded five points by Reed and Asriel
Rolfe while holding UTEP to no points for five and a half minutes. The Miners next points came from a jumper and
one by Fannie Goodwin at the 14:03 mark.
Over
the next seven minutes, the Trojans held UTEP scoreless while recording 11
points including four by Britteni Williams to extend the team's lead to
22-6. The Miners scored the team's next
basket in eight minutes on a three-pointer by Williams.
Both
teams exchanged points, before a jumper by Janette
Merriex sparked an 8-0 run by UALR to take a 31-11 lead. In the remaining 2:28, each team scored three
points to bring the half-time score to 34-14 in UALR's favor.
UTEP
opened the second half on a 4-0 run, before a steal by Kim Sitzmann and a jumper by Reed gave UALR the team's first points
of the half at the 17:42 mark.
Over
the next two and a half minutes, the Miners outscored UALR 8-5 to cut the
advantage to 41-26. UALR answered back
with a steal and jumper by Reed and a steal by Butler and free throws by
Sitzmann with 12:38 remaining.
A
jumper by Jareica Hughes at 12:24 sparked a 6-2 run by the Miners, before a
jumper by Reed and two free throws by Merriex brought the score to 51-32.
In
the remaining 6:58, UALR scored 13 points to UTEP's eight to win the game
64-40.
UALR
continues basketball action on Tuesday as they travel to Houston, Texas to face
Rice. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
