MORAGA,
Calif.—A last second layup by Drake lifted the Bulldogs over
the UALR women's basketball team 66-65 Saturday for the final day of the St.
Mary's Hilton Concord Tournament. The
Trojans fall to 3-3 on the season, while Drake improves to 3-2. Junior Chastity
Reed earned All-Tournament Team honors after averaging 24.7 points and 6.3
rebounds.
Four Trojans scored in
double figures as Reed led all
scorers with 22 points and contributed a team high seven rebounds. Marian
Kursh recorded a season-high of 11 points, while Asriel Rolfe tied her season-high with 13 points and contributed a
team high five assists.
Britteni
Williams tied her career-high of 11 points, and Shelby Ashcraft recorded career-highs
of nine points and seven rebounds.
In
the opening two minutes both teams exchanged points with all four of UALR's
coming from Kursh. After a jumper by Kristin
Turk for Drake at the 17:25 mark, free throws by Rolfe and Britteni Williams
gave the Trojans the team's first lead 7-6.
Over
the next three minutes, Drake outscored UALR 6-4 with the Trojans points coming
from Kursh and Rolfe to bring the score to 12-11 with 11:25 on the clock.
Both
teams knocked down points, before a three-pointer by Rolfe at the 9:24 mark
sparked a 7-0 run by the Trojans including four points by Britteni Williams giving
UALR a 22-16 advantage.
After
a three-pointer by Jordann Plummer for Drake, Shelby Ashcraft knocked down four
straight points to extend the UALR to 26-19.
Over
the next minutes, UALR outscored the Bulldogs four to three with 4:08 remaining
until the half. In the remaining 2:32 of
the half, both teams recorded scores with Plummer scoring a jumper for Drake
and Ashcraft knocking in a last second three-pointer to give the Trojans the
33-24 half-time lead.
Drake
used back-to-back three-pointer to spark a 12-4 run in the opening minutes of
the second half with all four of UALR's points coming from Reed to come within
one 37-36.
At
the 16:50 mark, a layup by Rolfe sparked an 8-0 run by the Trojans including
six points from Reed to extend the team's advantage to 45-36. The Bulldogs answered back with a 12-2 run to
take a 48-47 lead with 10:25 remaining.
After
free throws by Drake, UALR scored the team's first field goal in four minutes
on a jumper by Kursh followed by a jumper by Reed to regain a 51-50 lead.
Over
the next two and a half minutes, both teams matched points tying the score
three times including at the 5:17 mark with the Bulldogs sinking a layup to tie
at 56. Drake regained the lead at the
4:18 mark on a jumper by Katie Schechinger.
Rolfe
knocked down a three-pointer with 3:06 remaining and followed with a steal and
fast break layup to give UALR the 61-58 advantage, before the Bulldogs scored
four straight points.
A
jumper by Reed with 1:13 on the clock regained the Trojan lead. The Bulldogs answered with a layup with 44.6
remaining.
After
a UALR turnover and a Drake offensive foul, Reed recorded a jumper with 20.0
seconds to give UALR the 65-64 lead.
With 1.1 on the clock, a last second layup by Plummer won the game for
Drake 66-65.
UALR
continues basketball action on Wednesday as the Trojans host Ole Miss. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m. of the
double-header.
