Last Second Shot Lifts Arkansas State over Trojans 56-55

JONESBORO, Ark.?A last second shot by Jazmine Taylor lifted Arkansas State over the UALR women's basketball team 56-55 Wednesday at the Convocation Center.  The Trojans are now 19-5 overall and 11-2 in conference action.

 

Chastity Reed led all scorers with 28 points, knocking down 22 in the second half, while Marian Kursh led the team in rebounds with eight.

 

Arkansas State opened the first half with a jumper by Ebonie Jefferson, before Anshel Cooper tied the score at two with 18:55 on the clock.  A free throw by Cooper gave the Trojans their first lead.

 

After two free throws by the Red Wolves, a layup by Cooper sparked a 7-0 run by UALR including a three-pointer by Asriel Rolfe to take a 10-4 advantage with 13:46 until the half.

 

Over the next five minutes, UALR out scored ASU eight to seven to maintain a five point lead.  Sherina Scott scored on a layup for the Red Wolves, before a three-point play by Kursh followed by four straight points by Cooper brought the Trojan lead to 25-13 with 5:15 until the half.

 

In the remaining 5:03, the Red Wolves scored 15 straight points including six from free throws while holding the Trojans scoreless to take a 28-25 half-time lead.

 

Reed opened the second half with the Trojans first eight points including the opening four as both teams exchanged baskets and a one point lead. 

 

After both teams exchanged points, Reed scored four straight points with 10:34 remaining for a 41-38 lead.  Over the next four minutes, ASU out scored UALR nine to six to tie the score at 47 on a three-point play by Shania Hurst.

 

Both teams exchanged baskets, before the Trojans scored four straight points on jumpers by Kursh and Reed to take a 53-49 advantage.  After missed free throws by both teams, the Red Wolves tied the score at 53 on points by Jefferson with 2:01 remaining.

 

A put back by Kursh with 1:05 on the clock put UALR back in the lead.  Taylor scored a free throw with 32.7 left and a last second shot after her second missed free throw to give ASU the 56-55 win.

 

UALR continues conference action on Saturday as they travel to ULM.  Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
