Box Score MOBILE, Ala. ? South Alabama (14-19, 5-10) held the UALR baseball team (9-23, 5-13) to three hits on Sunday afternoon on its way to a 6-2 victory and a 2-1 Sun Belt Conference series win.
The Trojans held a 2-1 lead after four innings but the Jaguars plated four runs in the fifth, fueled by a three-run homer by Ryan Bohanan. Three South Alabama relievers combined to hold the Trojans hitless over the final 5.0 innings, with D.D. Hanks (1-0) picking up the win in relief with 3.0 shutout innings.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third, UALR pushed across two runs to take a 2-1 lead after senior Eric Hanlon hit a leadoff triple. Hanlon came around to score on a RBI groundout by senior Kody Kroll, and junior Nate Brown scored the go-ahead run from third off a sacrifice fly by junior Tyson Parks.
Down 2-1 in the fifth, Clint Reynolds drew a leadoff walk to start things off for the Jaguars. Reynolds moved up on a single by Zach Grichor and scored the tying run on a base knock by David Doss. Bohanan followed with a three-run homer to left (his first of the year) to put USA on top 5-2. The Jaguars tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Jake Overstreet scored from third on a throwing error.
USA starter Matt Jackson held the Trojans to three hits and two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts, but lasted just 4.0 innings. Hanks, Phillip Byrd and Greg Johnson closed out the game by holding UALR hitless over the final 5.0 frames.
Johnson picked up his second save of the year after taking the mound in the eighth with two runners on and two outs. He escaped the jam by getting a 4-3 groundout from the first batter he faced, then worked a scoreless ninth to secure the win ? aided by a 1-6-3 double play.
Junior Anthony Pryor (1-4) took the loss after allowing nine hits and six runs (five earned) to the Jagurs over 5.1 innings of work. Junior Sean Potter and freshman Andrew Loe combined to hold USA hitless over the final 2.2 scoreless innings.
UALR returns to action on Tuesday, April 14 when it heads to Tulsa, Okla. to take on Oral Roberts.
