MEMPHIS,
Tenn.—The UALR volleyball team split matches on the final day
of the Tiger Invitational losing 3-0 (24-26, 18-25, 23-25) to Samford and
coming back to win a five set battle with Memphis 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 25-19,
21-25, 16-14) Saturday. The Trojans are now
6-5 on the season.
In the first match against Samford, Anita Bucur led the team in kills
knocking down 19, while Giuliana De
Francesco led the team in assists with 34.
Emily Pepperman led the team
in digs recording 13.
In the first set, Samford (5-7) put the first point on
the board with a service ace, before the Trojans answered back with a kill by Paige Gantar. The Bulldogs then knocked down five straight
points to regain the advantage.
Samford maintained the lead throughout the match, but
UALR pushed points and tied the score at 23 on a kill by Katharina Nobel. Both teams
exchanged points, before a service ace by the Bulldogs and an attack error by
the Trojans gave Samford the 26-24 set win.

Mann opened the second set. Samford
answered back with three consecutive points including a Trojan error and a
service ace. UALR pushed points tying
the score at six on a service ace by Bucur and taking the lead on a Bulldog
error.
Samford regained the lead on a Trojan service error and
sustained it holding UALR to 18 points and winning on a kill by Sheriden
Stangohr.
In the third set, the Trojans opened on a 6-0 run
including two kills by Nobel. UALR
scored as many as four consecutive points to sustain the advantage. With the score 18-13 in UALR's favor, Samford
scored five straight points to tie the score.
After the Trojans regained the lead, the Bulldogs
pushed points and tied the score at 23, before a UALR attack error and a kill
for Samford won the set 25-23 and the match for the Bulldogs.
In the last match against Memphis, Bucur recorded a
team high of 22 kills, while Mann knocked down 16 and Gantar tied her
career-high with ten kills. Bucur also
recorded her second double-double of the season with ten digs.
De Francesco recorded a double-double with 50 assists
and 12 digs. Pepperman led the Trojans
with 19 digs, while Daniele Souza Moura recorded
a career-high of 16 digs.
UALR recorded their lowest attack percentage in the first
set with a .093 percentage while recording 11 kills and committing seven
errors.
The scored tied 17 times, while the lead changed hands
11 times. The final tie was at 24 with
Memphis (2-12) knocking down the kill. A
kill by the Tigers and a UALR attack error gave Memphis the set win 26-24.
UALR jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second set on a
Memphis error. The score tied 14 times,
while the lead changed six times.
With the score tied at 21, the Trojans scored four-straight
points including kills by Bucur and Gantar to win the set 25-21.
UALR recorded the team's highest attack percentage in
the third set recording 17 kills on 35 attempts and only four errors for a .371
mark.
The score changed hands during the first part of the
set. With the score tied at 14, the Trojans
rattled off eight straight points including two kills by Mann to take the 22-14
lead.
Memphis only scored 19 points in the set with UALR
winning on a Tiger service error.
Memphis started the fourth set 3-0, before the Trojans
pushed points and tied the score at four on a service ace by Pepperman.
The score would tie three more times, before Memphis
regained the advantage and sustained it.
The Tigers won the set 25-21 on a service error by the Trojans.
A service ace by Memphis started the fifth set, before
UALR tied the score on a kill by Bucur.
The score tied 12 times with the last being at 14 on a kill by Altrese
Hawkins for the Tigers.
The Trojans scored two straight points on kills by Mann
and Nobel to win the set and the match.
UALR open conference action on Thursday as they travel
to Monroe, La. to face ULM at 7 p.m.
