LITTLE
ROCK, Ark.--For the first time since 2008 and the first
time at home since 2005, the UALR women's basketball team defeated Middle
Tennessee 63-43 giving the Blue Raiders the team's largest conference loss
since 2002 and first this season Saturday at the Jack Stephens Center. Four Trojans scored in double-figures as the
team improves to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in Sun Belt conference action.
“I thought it was a great team effort,” said head coach
Joe Foley. “I think there was no double our offensive
was well balanced. I thought it was a
great defensive effort. I thought we did
a great job.”
Juniors Shanika
Butler and Asriel Rolfe led the
team in points knocking down 13 a piece.
Butler also led the team in rebounds with eight and steals with
four. Junior Chastity Reed recorded a double-double with 11 points and a
career-high ten assists, while sophomore Marian
Kursh knocked down 11 points in the win.
UALR
opened the half with a three-pointer by Rolfe, before Alysha Clark answered
with a layup. Over the next minute and a
half, both teams exchanged points to bring the score to 7-6 in the Trojans'
favor with 16:06 on the clock.
After
both teams exchanged points, a jumper by Butler at the 14:21 mark sparked a 6-0
run by the Trojans to take the 15-10 lead. Clark scored four points to UALR's two,
before a layup by Butler sparked another 6-0 run by the Trojans for the 23-14
lead at the 8:21 mark.
Over
the next five minutes, each team scored six points including a three-point play
by Butler and a three-pointer by Rolfe.
In the remaining 2:34, the Trojans held Middle Tennessee (9-5, 4-1 SBC)
scoreless while knocking down five points to go into the half-time with a 34-20
advantage.
In
the opening three minutes of the second half, each team scored six points with
UALR
keeping the 40-26 lead. After four
points from Clark and a layup by Britteni
Williams, the Trojans scored seven straight points including four from
Kursh for the 49-30 lead at the 8:51 mark.
After
a free throw by Clark, a layup by Britteni Williams sparked a 6-0 run to give
the Trojans the 55-32 advantage with 4:00 remaining. Both teams exchanged points in the remaining
3:56 with the Trojans maintaining the team's lead and winning 64-43.
UALR
continues conference action on Wednesday as the Trojans travel to New Orleans,
La. to face New Orleans. Tip-off is set
for 7 p.m.
