SEATTLE,
Wash.—The UALR women's basketball team ended the Seattle U
Thanksgiving Tournament with a 51-48 win over Montana State Saturday at the
Connolly Center. The Trojans improve to
3-2 overall. Senior Asriel Rolfe earned All-Tournament Team honors.
Rolfe led the Trojans with 13 points including three three-pointers,
while Janette Merriex recorded a
career-high of 11 points, eight rebounds, and three three-pointers.
Marian
Kursh led all rebounders with 14 tying her career-high.
After
UALR won the tip, the Trojans scored the first five points on a layup by Kursh
and a three-pointer by Rolfe. Montana
State scored the team's first field goal at the 16:56 mark on a jumper by Katie
Bussey.
Both
teams exchanged points, before a free throw by Kursh and a jumper by Fohne from
a steal by Megan Williams gave UALR the 10-4 lead with 13:59 until the half.
A
jumper and two free throws by the Bobcats cut the Trojan lead to 10-8, before a
jumper by Rolfe and a fast break layup by Megan Williams from Butler extended
the advantage to six. A free throw by
Kursh gave UALR the 15-8 lead with 8:54 on the clock.
The
Bobcats scored the team's first field goal in five minutes on a layup by Lyndi
Seidensticker, but the Trojans answered back with a three-pointer by Rolfe. After a Montana State basket, a three-pointer
by Taylor Ford gave UALR the team's largest lead at 21-12 with 7:09 until the
half.
Montana
State knocked down a layup and free throw, before UALR ended a four minute
scoring drought with a three-pointer by Merriex for the 24-15 lead at the 3:34
mark.
In
the remaining 3:24, Montana State outscored the Trojans six to five with UALR's
points coming from a layup from Britteni Williams and a three-pointer by
Janette Merriex for the 29-21 UALR half-time lead.
Montana
State opened the second half with a three-pointer by Sarah Balian, before Kursh
scored for UALR on a layup. The Bobcats
scored five-straight points, until a three-pointer by Merriex followed by a
steal and fast break layup by Ford ended the four minute scoreless streak and
gave the Trojans the 36-28 advantage with 14:32 remaining.
A
jumper by Chelsea Banis sparked a 6-0 run by Montana State cutting the UALR
lead to two. The Trojans ended a six
minute scoreless streak with a jumper by Rolfe for the 38-34 lead at the 9:21
mark.
UALR
scored two more points and held the Bobcats scoreless for three minutes, until
a three by Seidensticker cut the Trojan lead to three with 7:07 left in the
game.
Both
teams exchanged points, before a three-pointer by Balian tied the score at 42
at the 4:05 mark. The Trojans answered
back with a layup by Butler and a three-pointer by Rolfe to regain the 47-42
lead.
Back-to-back
layups by Montana State cut the lead to one with 2:06 remaining, before a layup
by Fohne from Rolfe regained the 49-46 lead.
With 22.9 to go, Ally Schmitt was fouled and drained two free throws to
cut the UALR lead to one.
Merriex
missed a free throw opportunity with 21.7 on the clock, but the Bobcats missed
a jumper. Fohne drained two free throws
with seven second left to give UALR the 51-48 lead.
Balian
missed a last second three-pointer with the Trojans holding on for the 51-48
lead.
UALR
continues action on Thursday as the Trojans travel to Oklahoma State. Tip set for 7 p.m.
