ROCK, Ark.—The UALR women's basketball team won the team's
third-straight contest Monday as the Trojans defeated Loyola Marymount 54-33 at
The Jack Stephens Center. The Trojans
improve to 6-5 overall as the team finishes up non-conference action.
Chastity
Reed led
all scorers with 24 points, while Marian
Kursh contributed 11 points and led the team with seven rebounds.
Both
teams opened the first half with baskets, before a steal by Shanika Butler followed by a layup and
one by Hannah Fohne sparked a 6-0
run by the Trojans for the 9-4 lead at the 15:13 mark.
Loyola
Marymount scored four straight points, before a layup by Kursh with 13:52 mark
sparked a 15-0 including six from Reed.
The Lions scored the team's next field goal in nearly nine minutes at
the 5:43 mark on a put back by Melanie Ysaguirre.
In
the remaining 2:54 until the half, the Lions outscored the Trojans four to two
with UALR's points coming from free throws by Kursh to bring the half-time
score to 26-14 in the Trojans' favor.
Reed
opened the second half with a jumper, before LMU answered with a three-pointer
by Candice Nichols. Over the next
minute, the Trojans outscored the Lions six to two to lead 34-19 with 16:24
remaining.
Both
teams exchanged points with LMU cutting the Trojan lead to ten at the 12:56
mark on a put back, before a layup and one by Butler gave UALR the team's first
field goal in five minutes and extended the advantage to 38-25.
After
a jumper by LMU, the Trojans scored 14 straight points while hold the Lions
scoreless for the 52-27 lead with 6:50 remaining.
In
the remaining 4:25, the Lions outscored UALR six to two with the Trojans'
points coming from a jumper by Whitney
Gaston-Loyd as the Trojan won 54-33.
UALR
opens Sun Belt Conference action on Thursday, December 30 as the Trojans play
at North Texas. Tip-off is set for 5
p.m.
