STILLWATER,
Okla.—The UALR women's basketball team allowed a nine-point
lead to slip away in the remaining five minutes as Oklahoma State remains
undefeated with a 55-52 win over the Trojans Thursday. The Trojans fall to 3-3 overall.
“I
thought we played a good 35 minutes of basketball and in the last five minutes
we didn't execute well,” said head coach Joe
Foley. “They are a big ball club and
athletic. It was a good ball game. I am more optimistic after this game then
last weekend.”
Chastity Reed led
all scorers with 19 points and led the Trojans with nine rebounds. Asriel
Rolfe recorded ten points and eight boards, while Janette Merriex scored eight points and brought down six boards.
UALR
scored the first field goal at the 19:21 mark on a layup by Hannah Fohne. Over the next four minutes neither team
scored, until 15:58 on the clock, when OSU scored on free throws by Jenni
Bryan.
A
layup by Fohne and a steal and fast break layup by Rolfe regained a 6-2 lead
for the Trojans, until the Cowgirls recorded five-straight points sparked by
OSU's first field goal at the 14:51 mark for the 7-6 lead.
Over
the next two minutes, OSU outscored the Trojans nine to five to gain the
Cowgirls largest lead of 16-11 with 8:23 until the half. A jumper and one by Reed sparked an 11-0 run
by the Trojans to regain a 22-16 advantage.
After
a layup by Lindsey Keller for OSU, a steal a layup by Reed and a layup by Rolfe
put UALR up 26-18. The Cowgirls scored a
free throw, but the Trojans went into half-time with the 26-19 lead.
OSU
opened the second half on a 6-0 run, before Marian Kursh recorded a put back at the 15:46 mark for the 28-25
Trojan lead. The Cowgirls answered back
with a jumper and free throw to tie the score at 28.
Both
teams exchanged points, before a jumper by Reed sparked a 13-0 run by the
Trojans including eight points from Reed and five from Merriex for UALR largest
lead of 43-30 with 8:10 remaining.
Oklahoma
State scored the team's first field goal in six minutes at the 8:10 mark on a
three-pointer by Tiffany Bias. Over the
next two and a half minutes, both teams scored with three of OSU's coming from
free throws, and Reed and Rolfe scoring to keep UALR up 47-38 with 5:19 left.
After
a free throw by Reed, OSU scored five-straight points including three free
throws from Toni Young to cut the Trojan lead to 48-43 with 2:45 on the clock. Reed answered with a jumper, before a
three-pointer by Keller cut into the UALR lead 50-46.
Butler
knocked down two free throws, before OSU answered with a layup. After a Cowgirl turnover and two UALR
turnovers, Oklahoma State scored four-straight points including a put back off
an OSU steal to tie the score at 52 with 30.6 left.
After
a UALR turnover, the Cowgirls scored on a jumper by Toni Young to take the
54-52 lead with 4.2 second remaining.
After another UALR turnover, the Trojans fouled OSU with Young making
one of two. OSU won 55-52.
UALR
continues basketball action on Saturday as the Trojans travel to Hattiesburg,
Miss. to face Southern Miss. Tip-off is
set for 5 p.m.
