HATTIESBURG,
Miss.—Despite holding a 13-point lead in the second half, the
UALR women's basketball team recorded the team's second-straight loss at
Southern Miss 47-48 Saturday. The
Trojans fall to 3-4 for the season.
Marian
Kursh and Janette
Merriex led the Trojans in scoring with ten points each, while Asriel Rolfe led the team in rebounds
with seven.
UALR
won the tip and scored on a jumper by Chastity
Reed. Tanesha Washington answered
back for Southern Miss with four straight points to take the lead. Over the next two minutes, Reed and
Washington continued the scoring with the score tied at six with 16:46 until
the half.
After
free throws by both teams, a three-pointer by Merriex sparked a 7-0 run by the
Trojans to take the 14-8 lead. The
Golden Eagles scored the team's first field goal in almost five minutes at the
11:16 mark on a jumper by Jamierra Faulkner, before Megan Williams answered with a jumper.
Over
the next three minutes, USM scored eight points including six off of UALR
turnovers while limiting the Trojans to a jumper by Merriex to tie the score at
18 at the 6:53 mark.
Both
teams exchanged baskets, with UALR scoring on a layup by Marian Kursh from Megan Williams.
Southern Miss answered with six-straight points to take the Golden
Eagles largest lead at 26-20 with 4:08 until the half.
Four-straight
points by Hannah Fohne sparked a
10-0 run by the Trojans to regain a 30-26 lead.
The Golden Eagles scored a fast break layup with 21.9 on the clock to
bring the half-time score to 30-28.
UALR
opened the second half on a 9-0 run including five from Merriex. Southern Miss scored the team's first field
goal at the 15:54 mark on a three-pointer by Washington to bring the score to
41-31 in UALR's favor.
After
a layup by Kursh from Rolfe, the Golden Eagles scored seven-straight points to
cut the Trojan lead to five with 11:34 on the clock. Both team exchanged free throws, before a
layup by Geneshia Dunbar tied the score at 44 at the 6:40 mark.
A
put back by Kursh broke a ten minute field goal scoreless streak for the
Trojans to regain the 46-44 advantage.
Over the next two minutes, Southern Miss scored four points from Rachel
Vigers, while the Trojans made one of four free throws to take the 48-47 lead with
2:38 left.
The
Trojans missed a scoring opportunity and forced the foul with 3.7 seconds on
the clock. USM missed the free throw,
but a last second shot from behind the time line from Rolfe hit the rim but
missed. Southern Miss held on for the 48-47
win.
UALR
continues basketball action on Saturday, December 11 as the Trojans travel to
Memphis, Tenn. to face the Tigers.
