LITTLE
ROCK, Ark.—For the first-time in school history, the UALR women's
basketball team defeated Arkansas State for a season sweep 79-48 Wednesday at
the Jack Stephens Center. Junior Chastity Reed tied the arena high she
set last week with 37 points leading the Trojans to 17-5 overall and 10-1 in
conference and the team's 12th straight victory.
“I can tell that the
Arkansas State game is starting to mean something,” said head coach Joe Foley. “I was proud that they focused like they did,
and we really got off to a good start. I
thought that was important.”
Reed went 14-of-31 from
the field and 9-of-11 from the free throw line while recording a double-double
with ten rebounds. Sophomore Marian Kursh recorded a double-double
with a season-high 16 points and a team and season-high 12 rebounds.
Senior Kim Sitzmann recorded 12 points, while
junior Asriel Rolfe knocked down 11
points in the win.
UALR
opened with a jumper by Rolfe, before Arkansas State recorded the Red Wolves'
first field goal at 17:50 on a layup by Ebonie Jefferson.
A
jumper by Reed at the 16:52 mark sparked a 12-0 run by the Trojans with six
coming from Reed to take the 14-2 advantage.
ASU scored the team's next field goal in four minutes on a jumper by
Lyndsay Schlup with 13:45 until the half.
A
block by Shanika Butler followed by
two free throws by Rolfe sparked the second run by the Trojans at the 13:00
mark with UALR going 12-0 and taking the 26-4 lead. With 9:07 until the half, a jumper by Sherena
Scott followed by five straight points by Jasmine Taylor cut the Trojan
advantage to 26-11.
Over
the next five minutes, UALR outscored the Red Wolves ten to three to gain a
37-14 lead. In the remaining 2:14, each
team scored four points with Reed recording all four for the Trojans to bring
the half-time score to 41-18.
UALR
opened the second half with a steal by Kursh and a layup by Butler from
Reed. ASU answered back with a jumper,
before the Trojans scored six straight points to bring the score to 49-20 with
17:31 on the clock.
Over
the next four minutes, each team scored nine points with UALR keeping the
thirty point advantage with a steal and fast break layup by Sitzmann at the
13:42 mark.
The
Trojans maintained the team's advantage through the next six minutes expanding
the lead to 75-37 with 7:07 remaining on a layup by Kursh.
In
the remaining 6:22, ASU outscored the Trojans eight to four, but the Trojans
held on for the 79-48 win.
UALR
continues conference action Saturday as the Trojans travel to
Louisiana-Lafayette. Tip-off is set for
2 p.m.
