Box Score LITTLE ROCK - Unplayable field conditions caused by seven inches of rain over the last two nights have forced the cancellation of Sunday's games at Gary Hogan Field. Friday's suspended game reverts back to the last completed inning, which gives UALR a 4-3 victory over New Orleans.
The Trojans (22-21, 5-14) ran out to a 2-0 lead at the start of Friday's contest as juniors Casey McCollum and Jake Rowell got things going with back-to-back singles. McCollum scored from third on a grounder by junior Jason Houston, and Rowell came around to score on a two-out, RBI base knock by senior Landis Wilson.
The Privateers (11-31, 2-20) answered by scoring three runs with two outs on the board in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. UALR starter Adam Champion retired the first two batters of the frame, but a two-out walk to Tyler Sanford and a single by Craig Schnell set the stage for a run-scoring double by John Thomas. Trailing 2-1, leadoff hitter Ryan Eden delivered a two-out, two-run single to center to put the Privateers on top 3-2.
UNO starter Kevin Berry retired six-straight Trojans over the second and third innings, but opened the fourth by issuing a leadoff walk to Wilson. Senior Nate Brown followed with a double to right to put two runners in scoring position, and freshman Tyler Cameron and junior Brock Feldmann delivered back-to-back RBI sacrifice flies to give the Trojans a 4-3 lead.
Trailing 4-3 after five innings, the Privateers were able to score the tying run in the top of the sixth on the strength of a Trojan throwing error, a single and two-straight walks. Sanford drew a walk as the rain began to fall, and UNO tied things up as Champion issued a bases-loaded walk to Schnell as he struggled to grip the ball. Play was stopped at 7:34 p.m., moments after UNO scored the tying run, which ended being wiped off the books as the suspended game reverts back to the last completed inning.
Champion improved to 5-4 on the year by holding the Privateers to four hits and three runs, with five strikeouts, over 5.0 innings. Berry (2-3) was credited with the loss after surrendering four hits, four runs and three walks over 5.0 frames.
UALR returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Norman, Okla. to take on the Sooners at 7 p.m.
