Kan.—The
UALR volleyball team split matches at the first day of the Kansas Invitational
Friday defeating Winthrop 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23) and losing to #18
Northern Iowa 3-0 (17-25, 17-25, 21-25).
The Trojans are now 2-7 for the season.
In the win over Winthrop, Paige Gantar tied her career-high of 21
kills and led the team with a career-high three blocks and a total of five
blocks. Ty Lindberg recorded a career-high of 13 kills, while Eva Xie finished with 12 kills.
Jennifer
Elbert recorded her third double-double of the season with a
career-high 47 assists and ten digs. Emily Pepperman led the team in digs
with a season-high of 20, while Rinata
Aisena and Daniele Souza Moura each
contributed ten digs in the win.
UALR recorded the team's
highest attack percentage in the first set recording 14 kills on 26 attempts
and only four errors with a .385 percentage.
The Trojans jumped to a
3-0 and maintained it throughout the set.
UALR held Winthrop to 13 points and scored the final five points of the
set on kills by Elbert and Gantar and a Winthrop attack error.
Winthrop opened the second
set with a kill, before a service error tied the score. UALR pushed points tying the score five times
but never could regain the lead.
Winthrop won the set 25-21
on a kill by Carolyn Weed.
In set three, UALR jumped
to an early lead after the score tied at one on a kill by Gantar and a Winthrop
attack error. Winthrop tied the score
five times and took a 9-8 lead, before a kill by Gantar sparked a five-point
run.
UALR held Winthrop to 22
points and won on a kill by Gantar.
Both teams exchanged leads
in set four with each team committing errors.
With the score tied at 20, an attack error by Winthrop followed by a
kill by Gantar gave the Trojans the final advantage.
UALR won the set and match
25-23.
In the first game against
Northern Iowa, Gantar led the team
in kills with 15, while Pepperman recorded
a team-high of 17 digs. Souza Moura also contributed 15 digs in the loss.
UNI jumped to a 2-0 lead
in the first set and recorded the team's highest attack percentage with 15
kills on 32 attempts and only two errors for a .406 percentage.
The Trojans pushed points
tying the score four times while gaining the lead, before a UALR attack error
gave UNI the edge.
Northern Iowa scored as
many as five straight points and won the set on a kill and a Trojan attack
error 25-17.
Both teams exchanged
points to open the second half. A kill
by Gantar sparked a 6-0 run by the Trojans to take the lead. UNI pushed points tying the scoring at seven
before taking the lead on a UALR attack error.
The Trojans tied the score
at 11 with a UNI attack error, but Northern Iowa scored four-straight points
and did not relinquish the lead. UNI
held the Trojans to 17 points and won the set 25-17.
UALR started the third set
with the advantage, before UNI knocked down three points to take the lead. The Trojans tied the score three times during
the middle of the set on two kills by Aisena and a UNI error.
UNI regained the lead on a
four-point run. The Trojans came within
one, but Northern Iowa held on for the 25-21 set and match win.
UALR continues action
tomorrow at the Kansas Invitational. The
Trojans face Kansas at 4 p.m.
