LITTLE
ROCK, Ark.—The UALR women's basketball team lost to No. 6 Texas
A&M 83-54 Thursday night at The Jack Stephens Center. The Trojans fall to
1-2 overall as the team hosted the highest ranked opponent at home.
“You are always
disappointed when you get beat, but still it's one of those situations where we
were looking for some things like if we could execute and get some good shots,”
said head coach Joe Foley. “I
thought we started the game and did a very good job of getting looks. The
momentum killer was when we missed some shots inside.”
Taylor
Gault led all scorers with a career-high 23 points going
8-of-17 from the floor, 2-of-4 from the three-point line, and 5-of-7 from the free
throw line. She also led the team with six rebounds.
Janette
Merriex recorded 13 points including three three-pointers,
while Taylor Ford led the team with
five assists.
The Aggies had five
players in double-digit with Kelsey Bone leading the team with 16 points and
eight rebounds.
Texas
A&M (3-0) won the tip and scored the first basket on a jumper, before a
three-pointer by Gault gave UALR the lead. Both teams exchanged points, before
another three by Gault put the Trojans up 9-6 with 16:36 on the clock.
Over
the next two minutes, the Aggies outscored the Trojans eight to four with all
of UALR's points coming from Gault. Five-straight UALR turnovers allowed Texas
A&M to score six points and take a 20-13 advantage with 12:09 until the
half.
After
back-to-back baskets by Sydney Carter for the Aggies, Merriex scored the
Trojans' first points in six minutes to cut the Texas A&M lead to 24-15. UALR
missed two free throws, before a layup by Adaora Elonu sparked a 9-0 run by
Texas A&M to lead 34-15 at the 4:25 mark.
Marian Kursh scored
UALR's first points in five minutes with a layup and one with 3:51 until the
half. In the remaining 3:32, the Aggies outscored UALR 13-3 for the 45-23
half-time edge.
UALR
opened the second half on a 5-0 run including a three-pointer by Merriex to bring
the score to 45-28 in Texas A&M's favor.
Over
the next four minutes, the Aggies scored 15 points to UALR's 6 all from Gault
to bring the lead to 60-34 at the 12:50 mark.
With
9:48 remaining, a jumper by Gault followed by a layup by Kursh from Hannah Fohne brought the Aggie lead to
64-42.
Two
steals and fast break layups by Texas A&M within a minute stretched the
lead to 76-47. In the remaining 2:09, UALR scored six points to the Aggies five
including a three-pointer by Merriex as Texas A&M won 83-54.
UALR
continues non-conference action on Tuesday, November 22 as the Trojans travel
to Ruston, La. to face Louisiana Tech. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
