BROOKINGS,
S.D.—The
UALR women's basketball team lost the Trojans fourth-straight contest Friday at
South Dakota State 64-55. The Trojans fall to 3-8 overall.
Taylor
Gault led all scorers with 24 points, scoring 17 in the first
half, while Janette Merriex contributed
14 points. Marian Kursh recorded 11
points and led the team in rebounds with nine.
UALR
opened with a jumper by Kursh, before South Dakota State took the lead on a
three-pointer by Jill Young. A jumper by Gault sparked a 9-3 run for the
Trojans to give UALR the 10-6 lead with 16:01 until the half.
After
a layup by the Jackrabbits, a UALR steal followed by a layup by Gault sparked an
8-0 run by the Trojans to extend the lead to 18-8 at the 13:10 mark.
Both
teams exchanged points, before four-straight points from Mariah Clarin for SDSU
narrowed the UALR lead to 20-16. Over the next five minutes, UALR held the
Jackrabbits to just three points while scoring 11 including seven from Gault to
regain the 31-19 advantage with 2:50 until the half.
In
the remaining 2:33 of the half, SDSU outscored the Trojans 9-1 to bring the
UALR half-time lead to 32-28.
Both
teams exchanged points to open the second half, before a layup by Steph Paluch
sparked a 6-0 run by South Dakota State to cut the Trojan lead to 39-38 with
16:31 on the clock.
After
free throws by Taylor Ford, the
Jackrabbits recorded four-straight points to take the team's first lead since
opening minutes 42-41 at the 12:27 mark. Over the next minute, UALR outscored
SDSU 8-2 including back-to-back three-pointers by Merriex and Gault for the 49-44
edge.
In
the next five minutes, SDSU held the Trojans to just a jumper by Merriex while
scoring eight points including five from free throws to regain a 52-51 lead at
the 5:02 mark.
After
free throws by Merriex, SDSU scored on a 12-2 run including six points off of
Trojan turnovers to win 64-55.
UALR
continues non-conference action on Wednesday as the Trojans lost Seattle.
