LITTLE
ROCK, Ark.—Despite being down by just one point at the half, the
UALR women's basketball team allowed South Dakota State to outscore the Trojans
39-29 in the second half to lose 60-49 to the Jackrabbits Tuesday at The Jack
Stephens Center. The Trojans fall to 3-5 on the season.
“South Dakota knows how to
play,” said head coach Joe Foley. “They
are going to play you tough defense most of the time. It was a good test for us
to see where we were after the Southern Miss game.”
Marian
Kursh led the team in points with 14 and in rebounds with
six, while Taylor Gault scored 11
points. Taylor Ford contributed
eight points in the loss.
Both
teams opened the half with baskets with UALR's coming from a layup from Fohne
from Kursh at the 18:56 mark. South Dakota State (6-3) answered back with
four-straight points for the 6-2 lead.
Both
teams exchanged points, before a free throw by Kursh followed by a steal and
fast break layup by Gault at the 12:20 mark sparked a 12-0 by the Trojans for
the 15-8 lead.
A
layup and one by Mariah Clarin scored the Jackrabbits first field goal in seven
minutes and sparked an 11-2 run to regain a 19-17 edge with 4:20 until the
half.
After
a free throw by Megan Williams, SDSU
scored on a layup by Tara Heiser after a combined four turnovers, before a last
second layup by Nia Gregory cut the
Jackrabbit lead to 21-20 at the half.
UALR
opened the second half on a 9-2 run including five from Kursh for the 29-23
lead with 16:57 on the clock. A layup by Gabby Boever sparked a 10-2 run by the
Jackrabbits to regain a 33-31 advantage with 13:06 remaining.
Both
teams exchanged points, before SDSU scored back-to-back layups for the 39-35
edge. A three-pointer by Janette Merriex
followed by made free throws by Kursh gave UALR the one-point lead with 9:53 remaining.
Over
the next five minutes, South Dakota State outscored the Trojans 11-3 including
two three-pointers to take the Jackrabbits largest lead of 50-43 at the 4:51
mark.
Both
teams exchanged points, until a UALR offensive foul at the 1:03 mark changed
momentum as the Jackrabbits scored the final six points on free throws to win
60-49.
UALR
continues non-conference action on Saturday as the Trojans host Memphis.
