UALR Splits Matches to Open 2011 Season at Memphis Invitational

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Junior Paige Gantar and freshman Edina Begic combined for 69 of the Trojans 111 kills as the UALR volleyball team split matches defeating Alabama A&M 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 25-19) and losing to Georgia State 2-3 (20-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-21, 5-15) at the Memphis Invitational Friday. 

In the first match against Georgia State, Begic led the team in kills with 19 and also recorded her first career double-double with 17 digs, while Gantar recorded 14 kills and a team-high of four total blocks.

Senior Kristi Block recorded nine kills and a team-high of four blocks, and junior Emily Pepperman led the team in digs with 24.  Juniors Sawyer Schaedig and Daniele Souza Moura recorded 11 digs.

Georgia State (1-0) won the first set 25-20 after scoring the final four points of the set on three kills and a UALR attack error.

The Trojans won the second set 25-23 recording 13 kills on 30 attempts with six errors for a .233 attack percentage.

After UALR scored the first point, Georgia State recorded six straight points including three service aces to take the advantage.

The Trojans pushed points tying the score at eight and nine both on GSU errors.  A kill by Begic sparked a 3-0 run by UALR to take the lead and sustain it.  UALR won the set on a Georgia State error.

GSU won the next set in extra points.  The lead changed hands several times including at the end of the set with Georgia State tying the set at 23, 24, and 25.

With the score 25 all, two UALR attack errors gave GSU the set win.

The Trojans took the fourth set 25-21.  After the score tied three times to start the set, UALR scored four-straight points including kills by Block, Schaedig, and Begic for the 8-4 lead.

GSU never recovered with UALR taking the set on a Georgia State attack error.

In the final set, Georgia State jumped to a 3-0 advantage to start, before the Trojans scored the team's first point on a kill by Gantar.  After both teams exchanged points, GSU knocked down six-straight points for the 10-3 lead.

GSU held UALR to just five points while winning on a kill by Kaylee McGrew.

In the win over Alabama A&M, Gantar led the team in kills with 19 and in attack percentage with a .529 mark on 34 attempts and only one error, while Begic recorded 17 kills and 11 digs for her second-straight double-double.

Block led the team in blocks with six, and Pepperman led the team in digs with 15.

The Trojans won the first set 25-20 limiting Alabama A&M to nine kills and a .062 attack percentage.

The score tied twice, before AAMU took the lead 9-2 scoring eight-straight points.  UALR pushed points tying the score at 12 on a kill by Gantar and at 15 and 16 before taking the lead on a kill by Alexis Hein

A kill by Gantar won the set for the Trojans.

In the second set, Alabama A&M came out on a 5-0 run, before a kill by Adisa Hodzic scored the first points for UALR.

The Trojans never recovered losing the set 25-18 and recording the team's lowest set attack percentage at .111.

Over the next two sets, the Trojans recorded .282 percentage on 16 kills and five errors for set three and .333 on 15 kills and four errors for set four.

The Trojans gained the lead early in both sets winning 25-20 in the third and 25-19 in the fourth.

UALR continues action at the Memphis Invitational on Saturday as the Trojans face host Memphis at 12 p.m. and Southeast Missouri at 4 p.m.
