CRUCES, N.M.—The UALR volleyball team dropped two
matches on the first day of the New Mexico State Tournament Friday losing to
LSU 1-3 (17-25, 22-25, 26-24, 13-25) and to host New Mexico State 0-3 (21-25,
27-29, 16-25).  The Trojans drop to 2-4
overall.
In the first match against
LSU, Edina Begic led the team in
kills with 14, while Alexis Hein and
Adisa Hodzic each contributed five.
Marleen
de Zoete recorded her first career double-double with a team
high of 27 assists and with ten digs.  Emily Pepperman recorded a team-high of
18 digs.
The Trojans recorded the
team's worst attack percentage in set one at -.156 despite starting the set on
a 3-0 run.  LSU pushed points tying the
score four times before taking the lead.
UALR didn't recover
scoring 17 total points and losing the set on an attack error.
The lead changed six times
with the score tying 12 in the second set. 
With the score tied at 15, the Trojans scored two straight points on
kills by Begic and Kristi Block for
the advantage.
The Tigers tied the score
twice before regaining the lead and sustaining it.  LSU won 25-22 on a Trojan service error.
Set three bounced back and
forth between teams.  With the score tied
at 22, a kill by Hodzic followed by a kill by Hein gave UALR the two point
advantage.  LSU pushed points tying the
score at 24 on a kill and Trojan error.
After a kill by Begic, a
Tiger error gave UALR the win.
In set four, both teams
exchanged points, before a LSU service ace gave the Tigers the lead.  The score tied three more times, before LSU
recorded three-straight points to take the advantage and sustain it.
The Tigers recorded runs
of six and four to keep the Trojans at 13 points and win on a UALR attack
error.
In the second match
against New Mexico State, Begic led the team in kills with 11, while Paige Gantar recorded nine kills and a
team high four blocks.
Pepperman led the team in
digs with 12.
Both teams exchanged
points, before NMSU scored three-straight, including two on UALR attack errors,
for the 3-1 advantage.  The Trojans
pushed points tying the score at three on a New Mexico State attack error and
at four on a Begic kill.
NMSU scored two-straight
points taking the lead and sustaining it. 
The Trojans ended with 21 points for the set.
Despite a 2-0 lead by the
Aggies to start the second set, the Trojans pushed points tying the score three
times and taking the lead 22-20.
UALR maintained the
advantage scoring set point on a kill by Eva
Xie, but New Mexico State tied the score four times forcing extra
points.  With the score tied at 27, a
service ace by NMSU and a UALR attack error gave the Aggies the set win.
The Trojans started set
three with an attack error, before a kill by Hodzic sparked a three-point run
for UALR.  NMSU pushed points tying the
score at six and taking the lead on kills.
UALR regained a one-point
lead, before four-straight kills by the Aggies pushed the lead in their favor.  The Trojans came within two but could not
regain the advantage.
The Aggies held UALR to 16
points winning on a kill.
UALR concludes action at
the New Mexico State Tournament Saturday as they face Grambling State.  Match is set for 12 p.m.
