MONROE,
La.—Despite
recording a 12-0 run in the remaining minutes of the second half, the UALR
women's basketball team lost the first match-up against ULM since 2006 with a
58-54 loss Thursday. The Trojans are now 7-10 overall and 2-2 in Sun Belt
Conference action.
The Warhawks used a 17-2
run to end the first and start the second half as ULM improves to 5-13 overall
and 3-2 in the SBC and breaks an 11 game Trojan winning streak over the team.
Three
Trojans scored in double-figures as freshman Kiera Clark led the team with 13 points, while freshman Taylor Gault recorded 12 points.
Sophomore Hannah Fohne contributed a
season-high ten points in the loss.
Senior
Marian Kursh led the team in
rebounds with all ten coming in the first half.
The
Trojans opened the first half 0-of-5 from the field as ULM opened on a 6-0 run.
UALR scored the team's first field goal at the 15:34 mark on a jumper by Gault.
Both
teams scored points with UALR edging into the Warhawks lead. With 9:40 until
the half, the Trojans scored six points to ULM's three including four from
Fohne to take the team's first lead of the half 16-15.
The
lead changed hands twice, before two free throws by Larrie Williams at the 4:20
mark sparked a 9-0 run for the Warhawks to take the 26-19 advantage.
Fohne
scored a layup with 22 seconds until the half to score the Trojan's first field
goal in seven minutes and bring ULM's half-time lead to 26-21.
ULM
opened the second half on a 8-0 run including four free throws off of two of
five UALR turnovers to take the 34-21 lead. The Trojans scored the team's first
field goal at the 15:50 mark on a jumper by Gault.
The
Warhawks took the team's greatest lead of 40-25 at the 14:36 mark after going
6-2 with back-to-back three-pointers by Alexar Tuglar.
With
14:16 remaining, a free throw by Britteni
Williams followed by a jumper by Gault sparked an 8-1 run by the Trojans to
cut the ULM lead to 41-33.
UALR
cut the Warhawk lead to nine on layups by Britteni Williams and a jumper by Megan Williams, before ULM scored
six-straight points and regained the 57-42 edge with 4:29 on the clock.
With
4:23 remaining, back-to-back baskets by Gault sparked a 12-0 run by UALR to cut
the ULM lead to 57-53. After a free
throw by ULM, the Trojans missed a jumper that would have cut the lead to a one
possession game.
In
the last 19.3, both teams shot free throws as ULM won 58-54.
UALR
continues Sun Belt Conference on Saturday as the Trojans travel to Jonesboro,
Ark. to face in-state rivals Arkansas State. Tip-off is set for 3:05 p.m.
