LITTLE
ROCK, Ark.—The UALR women's basketball team won the Trojans
second-straight contest Tuesday with a 62-48 victory over Nicholls State at The
Jack Stephens Center. The Trojans improve to 6-9 overall.
Freshman Taylor Gault led the team in points
with 19, while senior Marian Kursh recorded
a double-double with 18 points and career and team-high of 19 rebounds, just
shy of the UALR game record of 21.
Senior Britteni Williams contributed a
career-high of 11 rebounds in the win.
UALR
started the first half 5-0 on a jumper by Gault and three-pointer by Janette Merriex, before Nicholls State
(7-6) recorded the team's first field goal at the 15:48 mark.
Over
the next four minutes, the Trojans outscored the Colonels 8-3 with all of UALR
points coming from Gault and Taylor Ford
for the 13-5 lead with 10:27 until the half.
Nicholls
State answered back over the next five minutes scoring eight points to the Trojans'
four to cut the UALR lead to 17-14 with 6:19 on the clock.
In
the remaining 6:00 until the half, UALR held the Colonels to a three-pointer
with 45.0 on the clock while scoring eight-straight to take a 25-17 half-time
lead.
Nicholls
State opened the second half with a three-pointer followed by four-straight
points by the Trojans from Gault and Kursh. At the 15:51 mark, the Colonels
went on an 8-2 run including a three-pointer by KK Babin to cut the UALR lead
to 31-28.
Five-straight
points by Kursh including a layup and one scored the Trojans first field goal
in six minutes, before NSU knocked down a jumper to bring UALR's lead to 36-30
with 12:35 on the clock.
After
six-straight UALR baskets, both teams exchanged points including a
three-pointer by Babin for the Colonels at the 8:55 mark to cut the Trojan lead
to 46-36.
Over
the next four minutes, UALR outscored Nicholls State nine to three to extend
the lead to 55-39. With 4:16 on the
clock, the Colonels scored eight-straight points including back-to-back
three-pointers by Babin to cut UALR's advantage to 55-47.
A
three-point play by Gault scored the Trojans' first field goal in over four
minutes and gave UALR the 58-47 edge with 1:12 remaining. In the final minute,
both teams scored on free throws with the Trojans winning 62-48.
UALR
continues Sun Belt Conference action on Saturday as the Trojans host Florida
Atlantic. Tip-off for the double-header is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at The Jack
Stephens Center.
