- UALR (12-4) split its doubleheader and won its best-of-three series with
Wisconsin-Milwaukee (4-10) on Saturday at Gary Hogan Field. The Trojans took
the opener by a 10-3 score before having its seven-game win streak snapped with
a 10-5 loss in ten innings in game two.
Game
One - UALR 10, Wisconsin-Milwaukee 3
UALR put up 10 runs on 11 hits in Saturday's opener,
topping Milwaukee by a 10-3 final in what was the team's seventh-straight win
and seventh-straight game scoring at least 10 runs. Junior Blake Huffman got the victory to improve to 3-1 on the season,
going 7.0 innings while striking out seven and giving up just two runs on five
hits.
Huffman took a no-hitter into the top of the fifth, and
at one point retired nine straight from the middle of the second through Sam
Koenig's single to break up the no-hitter in the fifth. Milwaukee starter Cale
Tassi was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs on six hits in 4.1
innings of work. Freshman Cameron Allen
came on in relief for Huffman to start the ninth and retired six of seven to
close out the Panther's final two sets of at bats.
Four Trojans put up two hits in game one. Sophomore Kaleb Jobe went 2-for-5 with two RBI
and two runs scored, while junior David Guarno
went 2-for-4 with a homer and a triple to go along with two RBI and three runs
scored. Senior Sean Bignall was
2-for-5 with an RBI and senior Greg
Garcia went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Myles Parma didn't collect a hit but
walked three times and scored a pair of runs.
UALR jumped out to an early lead, piling on four runs
on two hits in the top half of the first. UALR got started when Crumpton and
Parma drew walks to lead off the inning and the next batter, Jobe, singled to
right field to bring home both runners. Then with Jobe on first, Guarno blasted
his first home run of the season over the left field fence to make it a 4-0
game after one.
UALR added another run in the fifth on a triple by
Guarno and RBI single by Bigall to up the lead to five, and then tacked on four
in the bottom half of the sixth to go up 9-0. Parma came home on a wild pitch
for the first run of the inning, while a two-RBI double by Garcia and an RBI
single by senior Nick Rountree were
responsible for the final three UALR scores of the frame.
Milwaukee was able to get on the board with a pair of
runs on four hits in the top of the seventh. After Jonathan Capasso singled to
lead off the inning, an RBI double by Will Fadness drove in the Panthers' first
run of the game. Fadness advanced to third on the play at the plate, and a sac
fly by the next batter, Koenig, plated the second Milwaukee run of the inning.
UALR's second triple of the game, this one off the bat
of junior John Clark, plated the
tenth and final run of the game for the Trojans in the bottom of the eighth.
Clark's RBI secured UALR's seventh-straight, and tenth total, game with at
least 10 runs scored.
Game
Two - Wisconsin-Milwaukee 10, UALR 5 (10 Innings)
An RBI double to left-center field by Thionnet in the
bottom of the ninth inning tied the score at 4-all and sent game two into extra
innings, but Milwaukee scored six runs in the top of the tenth and eventually
went on to win by a 10-5 score to snap the Trojans' seven-game win streak. The
Panthers put up 14 hits on the day, while the UALR pitching staff combined to
issue 13 walks in the game.
No UALR hitter ended game two with more than one hit.
Junior Tyler Cameron, Garcia,
Rountree, Thionnet and Bentley all ended the game with one apiece, with Cameron
and Thionnet both hitting doubles.
Kaleb Engelke was credited with the win after closing
out the ninth and ending the day with no runs on no hits in 0.1 innings pitched.
Thionnet picked up the loss for the Trojans after surrendering four runs on two
hits in 1.0 innings of work.
Starters Mike Schneider and Austin Pfeiffer each cruised through the first three innings, with
neither pitcher running into trouble until Milwaukee was able to get to
Pfeiffer with a three-run frame in the top of the fourth. Three-straight
singles to start the inning plated the first UWM run of the game, and the
second came home on a Balk by Pfeiffer with the bases loaded. The Panthers'
Nick Lingvay drove in a run on an infield single to cap the three-run inning
for Milwaukee.
UALR answered with three runs in the bottom of the
fifth. An RBI single by Bentley brought home Rountree, who singled earlier in
the inning, for the Trojans' first run of the contest. A sacrifice fly by
Cameron then scored Thionnet, and Bentley scored the inning's third and final
run when he got to come home from third on a balk by Schneider.
Milwaukee was able to take one-run lead in the top of
the seventh. Despite zero UWM hits in the innings, the Panthers were able to
score thanks to four issued walks by Trojan pitchers and make it a 4-3 game.
UALR manufactured a two-out rally in the bottom of the
ninth to send the game to extras. Rountree drew an HBP with two outs on the
board, which was followed by Thionnet's double to left center. Allen, who was
pinch-running for Rountree, scored the game's tying run all the way from first
on Thionnet's game-tying double.
But Milwaukee was able to respond with six runs on four
hits in their first set of extra-inning at bats. Following a pair of walks and
a bunt single, Thionnet hit Michael Porcaro with a pitch to bring in the first
run of the frame. Freshman Stephen
Chandler then came on to pitch for the Trojans, and the Panthers' Paul
Hoenecke hit a three-RBI double to right field to quickly make it a four-run
deficit for UALR. Hoenecke scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to give
UWM its tenth and final run.
Cameron led off the bottom of the tenth with a double
and scored later on an RBI groundout by Bignall. But that would be as close as
the Trojans would get, as Jordan Guth was able to get Garcia to strike out
swinging to end the game.
UALR will have a day's rest before it returns to action
with a pair of midweek games at Southeast Missouri State. Tuesday's matchup in
Cape Girardeau, Mo., will begin at 3 p.m.
