Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets at Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – UALR (20-8, 12-4 Sun Belt Conference) lost its first true road game since August when it fell in straight sets at Western Kentucky (24-5, 14-1) 25-18, 25-17, 25-15 Sunday afternoon (Nov. 10).

Western Kentucky held a 44-35 edge in kills and outhit UALR .395-191. The Hilltoppers also claimed slim advantages in digs (35-29) and blocks (7-5).

Individually for the Trojans, junior Edina Begic had a match-best 13 kills. With four errors on 25 swings, she had a team high .360 hitting percentage. Sophomore Sonja Milanovic recorded 11 kills, six of which came in the first set. She barely missed the double-double with nine digs.

Junior Marleen de Zoete added 33 assists.

Paige Wessel led Western Kentucky with 12 kills and only two errors on 20 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Noelle Langenkamp also hit .500 with 11 kills and two errors on 18 attempts. Melanie Stutsman had 39 assists while Ashley Potts was the only player in double digits in digs (12) for the match.

UALR kept pace with Western Kentucky early in the first set as UALR scored four unanswered after falling behind 7-4. A Milanovic kill put sophomore Adisa Hodzic on serve. A WKU error and UALR's lone ace of the afternoon tied the match. Another Western Kentucky error gave the Trojans an 8-7 advantage.

The Trojans later went on a 4-1 run in the set to stake a 14-13 advantage. A service error put UALR on serve and a Begic kill tied the frame. Janee' Diggins stopped the run with a kill for WKU, but a Milanovic kill and a Begic-Hodzic block gave UALR the advantage. Western Kentucky answered with five unanswered to go up for good in the set. A Diggins kill and solo bock put WKU up. An ace from Potts and a solo block and kill by Wessel pushed the WKU advantage to 18-14. The Hilltoppers won the set by seven.

UALR fell behind 13-8 in the second before pulling within two. Begic kills around a Diggins error brought the Trojans with 13-11. WKU answered with a kill from Wessel and an assisted block by Lagenkamp-Haley Bodway put WKU up four. UALR never trailed by less than three the rest of the set. Western Kentucky never trailed the rest of the match as it won the second set by seven and the third set by 10.

UALR returns to action for its final home match of the season Friday (Nov. 15) when it entertains Texas State at 7 p.m. The Trojans will honor the contributions of de Zoete and junior Allison Wyatt prior to the match.
