Trojans Hold Red Wolves To 35, Win in Jonesboro

JONESBORO – The Little Rock women's basketball team got back in the win column on Friday, defeating in-state rival Arkansas State 60-35 at the Convocation Center.

The Trojans (19-7, 13-1 Sun Belt Conference) were the beneficiary of 21 turnovers from the Red Wolves (5-21, 3-11), scoring 23 points off those turnovers. And after a close second period, Little Rock outscored Arkansas State 17-6 in the second quarter to build a comfortable lead.

The win was Little Rock's first at the Convocation Center in four years, and Arkansas State scored its fewest points ever in the 41-year series against the Trojans. Their previous scoring low was 36 points in Little Rock in 2011.

Ronjanae DeGray was Little Rock's leading scorer with 15 points, and the sophomore nearly recorded a double-double with nine points. Kaitlyn Pratt also was close to a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Sharde' Collins had 13 points to also finish in double figures.

Kyra Collier scored 6 points, but the freshman added eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Monique Townson led the team with four assists in just 23 minutes due to foul trouble and also had three steals.

Little Rock began the evening sluggish, but things picked up for the Trojans by the end of the first quarter. Leading 10-8, Little Rock went on a huge 21-6 run to close the first half and take a 17-point lead into the break.

Arkansas State committed 16 first-half turnovers – two more turnovers than they scored points – that led to 15 Little Rock points, and the Trojans held the Red Wolves to just 6 of 21 shooting from the field in the first half.

The Trojans return home for the first time in nearly three weeks on Thursday, hosting Georgia Southern as part of their annual Play4Kay Pink Game. The Trojans and Eagles will tip off at 6:30 p.m.
