LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Friday marks several firsts for Little Rock Volleyball. The first match of the 2019 season, the first collegiate match for the team's nine newcomers and the first time Little Rock will face Arkansas in a regular season match.
There likely has never been so much anticipation paired with so many unknowns entering a season as Trojan Head Coach
Van Compton enters her 32
nd year guiding the program. With so many new faces, it will be a weekend of seeing what new face will be willing to step up first.
Series History
- Arkansas: Arkansas leads, 1-0, after a meeting in the 1997 NCAA Tournament when the Razorbacks were ranked 18th in the nation.
- Montana State: Friday's match marks the first time the two programs will meet.
- Northwestern State: Little Rock holds a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series but Saturday's match will mark the first time in a decade the two teams will square off against one another.
Three Things to Know
- Grab a Roster Card
You'll need it. Little Rock is sporting nine new faces on the volleyball court this year, although fans should know one of them. In addition to the eight newcomers to Little Rock's Team, Anna Hurlburt has made the move from basketball to volleyball for her senior season.
- Brand New with an Accent
The City of Little Rock's promotional slogan is "Brand New with a Southern Accent" and, with the exception of the Southern part of the Accent, Little Rock's Volleyball team reflects that promo pitch. The 2019 Trojans feature nine new faces and a total of eight players from foreign countries. Add in that twang of native Texans and you get two more Trojans that bring an accent to Little Rock.
- Entering the 32nd Year Driving the Van
Little Rock Head Coach Van Compton enters her 32nd year guiding the volleyball program at Little Rock while the program enters year 28 in the Sun Belt Conference. Hired to restart the volleyball program starting in 1988, Compton is the only coach the program has known since its resurrection. In that time she has made six postseason appearances including a trip to the NIVC last season.
