Little Rock Soccer Victorious on Senior Day

LITTLE ROCK – The Trojan soccer team (3-4-2) shutout the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (1-5-1) on Senior Day this afternoon 2-0, continuing with their momentum from Thursday's home win.

Bergros Asgeirsdottir notched her first goal of the season early in the game, sending the ball flying from wide outside the box and into the top of the net after a corner kick from Morgan Smocovich in the 8th minute. Later, in the second half, the offense showed strong control with up-the-field movement by Jessica Carmichael. She nutmegged the opposition, passing to Mari Young, who danced around the keeper after she challenged, dribbled forward, and scored into an open goal.

"It was fantastic getting the win on Senior Day," said head coach Mark Foster. "I think Senior Day is massive in that you give back to the players that have given so much. It was important our younger players played the type of game that they played today to honor the seniors. When you think about it, that is our most complete performance and it came a week before conference. You couldn't have asked for better timing. When you think about our defense, the attacking play and the balance, when you bring it all together it was just a fantastic day."

The game was aggressive from start to finish, with a multitude of fouls called on both sides. Although both teams were able to enter into the defensive zone of the opposite team, earning three corner kicks per team, the Trojans had double the amount of shots than the Lions, eight to four. Young led with two on goal, but six other Little Rock players had shot opportunities as well.

"A lot of respect for Southeastern, even when we went up 2-0 most teams would just give in. At that stage they just kept fighting and fighting until the end. Overall, I am delighted with the standard of the game played in the conditions," said Foster.

"I am delighted that our girls came out on top," he added. "We talked about being more composed in the final third and taking our chances and it was great to see that. At the same time, what gives you the complete game is that we were able to create that offense while, at the same time, without losing anything defensively. That is two games in a row now with clean sheets, five goals and a bunch of chances created. These girls have been working really hard and haven't had many days off in the last month. I'm glad they are finally getting the rewards for their dedication and effort."

The Trojans will be on the road next weekend, traveling to Georgia State on Friday, Sept. 20 and Georgia Southern on Sunday, Sept. 22. The Friday game will begin at 6:00 p.m. CT and the Sunday game will start at noon Central Time.
