LITTLE ROCK – The Little Rock soccer team (1-4-2) recorded two goals this evening against the UCA Bears, the most within one match this season. The game was a nail-biter as the Trojans led with 15 minutes remaining, and the Bear offensive efforts increasing to the point that they forced double overtime, scoring with less than a second on the clock. However, the Trojan defense went on lock-down mode, ending the match in a 2-2 tie.
Sophomore
Natalee Geren put up the first goal by crossing her kick from the right side of the field into the upper left corner of the goal. Junior
Morgan Smocovich earned her third assist of the year by completing a beautiful pass to Geren after charging up the center.
Freshman
Mari Young gave the Trojans the advantage at the 76th minute mark, smashing the ball into the bottom left corner from approximately 20 yards out to the delight of a roaring home crowd.
"I thought tonight was a really good game," said head coach
Mark Foster. "Both teams are coming off really tough games. We had it won but with where we are with this team, with 10 seconds to go we have to learn to see it out. We give away a silly free kick and we didn't mark in the box. We can't feel sorry for ourselves; we let it happen. We have to be mature, take it on the chin and learn from it. We still have two weeks to conference. If we do that, we'll have a wonderful season. If we don't, we'll be feeling sorry for ourselves."
"We could have felt sorry for ourselves there [after the equalizing goal] but we didn't," he continued. "We picked ourselves up and we fought and got a draw that we deserved. We have to apply that mentality to the rest of our season. If we do that, we'll have a great season. The girls know that I expect that from them so I'm sure we'll do it."
The Trojans will be back home once more this Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6:00 p.m. as Little Rock will host Mississippi Valley State.
