LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Kyra Collier scored 16 points and
Teal Battle added 14 points but the Trojans as a team shot just 20% from the field in a 57-42 loss to South Alabama at the Jack Stephens Center.
Â
The loss, coupled with Louisiana's win over Texas State, eliminates the Trojans (11-18, 9-9 Sun Belt) from a host seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament. However, Little Rock's destination is still not yet known and will be determined later Saturday evening.
Â
South Alabama (14-16, 9-9) knows it will head to Arlington, Texas for the UT Arlington pod as the No. 6 or No. 7 seed, but exact seed and opponent is also not yet known.
Â
Most of Collier's game-high 16 points came in the first quarter, where she reached double digits within the first 10 minutes. Overall, she was 6 of 18 (33%) from the field to buoy the Trojans but the rest of the team combined for 5-for-36 (13.8%) shooting for the game.
Â
Battle scored most of her points at the free throw line, shooting a career and school record 100% mark with 12 makes on 12 attempts at the charity stripe. It is the second-most made free throws in a game for a single player in Little Rock history.
Â
The Jaguars out-scored Little Rock 17-7 in the second quarter and took a 10-point lead into halftime after the Trojans failed to score in the final 5:38 of the period.
Â
Both teams struggled from the field in the third quarter with the Trojans facing a 12-point deficit entering the final period of play. South Alabama made that a 14-point margin with an Antoinette Lewis layup before Little Rock went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 46-40 with less than five minutes to play. Lewis led the Jaguars with 16 points and nine rebounds, barely missing a double-double.
Â
That is when South Alabama regained control and extended the margin back to double figures by ending the game on a 6-0 run and preventing any Little Rock field goals over the final 4:56 of game time.
Â
The first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be on Tuesday, March 10. Locations, times and a full bracket will be announced Saturday evening.
