BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Little Rock placed on the podium in three events – led by
Cameron Jackson's win in the 60m dash – and the Trojan men recorded their best conference indoor finish in a decade as action wrapped up at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in Birmingham Tuesday evening.
The Trojan men finished sixth overall by scoring 62 points while the women scored 17 points to place 11
th. It marked the highest finish and most points scored for the men since 2011 while the women matched their most points scored in four years while matching their highest finish over the past three years.
That men's performance was once again led by
Cameron Jackson, who won the 60m indoor title after running 6.75 in the finals, smoothly and seemingly easily blowing away the competition.
Cogan DeRousselle ran 6.99 to finish eighth in the finals race.
Jonathan Jones fell just short of claiming another gold medal for the Trojans, clearing 6-11 (2.11m) to finish second in the men's high jump.
Christian Matamoros jumped 6-8.75 (2.05m) to finish fourth.
Also finishing fourth for the Trojans was Ricardo Banks in the 800m as he ran 1:54.18 in the finals while
Colby Swecker ran 1:58.48 to place eighth. The pair combined with
Phillip Anderson and
Jalen Black on the 4x400m relay to claim a medal, running 3:17.54 to finish third at the meet with a time that ranks as the sixth-best relay time in school history. Black also scored in the 400m, running 48.84 to finish fifth.
Avianna Trinidad set a new school record as she cleared 12-6 (3.81m) in the pole vault to finish fourth. Another fourth-place finish came from
John Ferguson in the shot put, whose throw of 51-1.5 (15.58m) ranks second in school history.
Little Rock now awaits final declarations for the NCAA Indoor Championships, set for Mar. 11-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
