LITTLE ROCK - Little Rock's five-game road swing continues this weekend, traveling to Monroe, Louisiana, for a three-game series agaisnt ULM at Warhawk Field. Due to the threat of rain all day Friday, the series has been pushed back a day, beginning Saturday, April 17 at 2 p.m., followed by game two Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. and the finale Monday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
Little Rock jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Central Arkansas, but the Bears scored the final four and thwarted a handful of Trojan opportunities to take the 4-2 win in Conway on Tuesday. Little Rock stranded a runner in scoring position in each of the last four innings, but eight different UCA pitchers kept the Trojan bats in check.
Noah Dickerson led the way, going 3-for-4, while
John Michael Russ was 2-for-4, accounting for five of Little Rock's eight hits on the night.
Kenny the Jet
Since entering the lineup in the final game of the Auburn series,
Kenny Rodriguez has been an offensive spark for the Trojans. He is batting .306 and is second on the team in both slugging percentage (.532), RBI (19) and walks (14) and is tied for second with four home runs. Rodriguez drove in four in the 9-8 come-from-behind victory over South Alabama Sunday, including the two-run walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the series sweep.
Williams Doing it All
Sophomore
Tyler Williams continues to show why he is the Sun Belt's top prospect for 2022, batting .330 on the year while leading the team in slugging percentage (.565), at bats (115), hits (38), doubles (8), triples (2), home runs (5), RBI (29), total bases (65) and stolen bases (6). Williams has reached base safely in 28 of Little Rock's 29 games this season and leads the team with 10 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games.
Arnold Record Watch
Entering the weekend, senior
Hayden Arnold ranks eighth in program history in career strikeouts with 184, sitting just four shy of catching Chance Cleveland's 188 from 2012-13 for seventh. Arnold is also nearing the top-10 in innings pitched at 178.0 with Jacob Anderson's 196.2 IP from 2000-01 ranking 10th in Trojan program history.
Scouting the Warhawks
ULM enters the weekend at 11-17 overall and 3-9 in Sun Belt play, coming off an 0-3 weekend at Georgia Southern, but have big wins this season over #4 Ole Miss, #14 Oklahoma State and Alabama. The Warhawks are batting .265 as a team with a .380 slugging percentage, averaging just shy of five runs per game with three starters batting .300 or better. On the mound, ULM has posted a 5.27 ERA, striking out 220 as opposed to just 93 walks with the opposition batting .264.
Series History
Little Rock and ULM have met 81 times heading into this weekend with the Warhawks holding a 46-35 lead in the all-timer series. Monroe has been a tough place for the Trojans to play, going just 10-36 all-time, but the Trojans have won five of the last eight at Warhawk Field. The two teams last met in 2019 with the Trojans taking two of three from the Warhawks, falling in the opener 5-2 but bouncing back to win a 7-3 and 4-2 doubleheader on April 20.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. With the weekend sweep of South Alabama, head coach
Chris Curry became the program's all-time leader in conference victories, sitting at 79 wins in Sun Belt play. That surpasses the 76 conference victories by Hall of Fame head coach Gary Hogan as Curry's .510 winning percentage in league play (79-76) also ranks first in program history.
2. Little Rock has taken advantage of being in front as the Trojans are 15-3 this season in games in which they have held a lead at any point in the game. Little Rock's lone losses in which it held a lead was the 10-7 defeat to 22nd-ranked Southern Illinois on Mar. 26 (Trojans led 3-0 in the 2nd), at Arkansas State on Apr. 1 (Trojans led 1-0 in the 1st and 2-1 in the 2nd) and at Central Arkansas on Tuesday (Trojans led 2-0 in the 2nd).
3. Little Rock enters the weekend as one of the nation's top double play-turning teams, leading the Sun Belt with 25 on the year. The Trojans' 25 double plays rank 16th nationally and they rank 23rd in double plays per game (0.89), logging a season-high three at Southern Illinois on March 27 and again against UA Pine Bluff on March 31.
4. Little Rock is getting use to playing away from Gary Hogan Field as this weekends's series continues a five-game road swing and will be the start of a tough stretch where the Trojans will play 12 of 15 away from Little Rock. From March 5 through May 14, Little Rock is scheduled to play 26 road games with just 10 home dates at Gary Hogan Field during that stretch.
5. Little Rock has used a big inning to help jump start rallies as the Trojans have scored three or more runs in 22 innings through the 2021 season. Little Rock has scored five or more runs on six separate occasions, including Sunday's ninth inning against South Alabama, scoring at least four runs in an inning in each of the victories over the Jaguars this season.
