Trojans Extend Streak to Three Saturday

Little Rock escapes Southern Indiana in a five-set match

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Little Rock capped off a perfect week with a 3-2 win over Southern Indiana at the Jack Stephens Center Saturday afternoon.

The win, the third in a row for the Trojans, wasn't easy and wasn't pretty. Little Rock (7-18, 4-8 Ohio Valley) corrected its serving woes from Friday with five aces and registered 16 total team blocks, but was out-hit, .140 to .051. Set scores were 31-29, 25-17, 11-25, 18-25 and 15-10.

Zanobia Willis hit a match-leading .538 with eight kills and added five blocks; she was one of four Trojans with at least a handful of blocks in the match. Daria Burrows led the Trojan offense with 12 kills.

Daedrianna Cail dominated at the net, tallying nine total blocks. Her four solo blocks ranks tied for 11th most in school history in a single match.

Gabrielle Spankus (21 assists, 14 digs) and Jalynn Robinson (20 assists, 17 digs) both recorded double-doubles but it may have been Robinson's dig late in the first set that was most memorable. Racing towards the net, Robinson dove to keep the ball in play then slid out of bounds as she passed under the net. Racing back around the official's stand, she got to the other side of the court in time to record a dig which led to a Little Rock point and propelling the Trojans to the 31-29 set win.

Domination occurred in the second and third sets but in different manners. After Southern Indiana (1-21, 1-10) claimed a 25-11 third set victory, they used that momentum to force a fifth set.

In the final frame, the momentum swung the other way quickly as Little Rock jumped out to a 4-0 lead and would never trail. USI came as close as two at 11-9 but a Little Rock timeout thwarted the Screaming Eagle momentum. Cail would make blocks in two of the final three points to clinch the win.

Little Rock returns to action next weekend when the Trojans head to Tennessee Tech for a two-match OVC series starting Friday evening.
