Sophia Reynolds Wraps up Action at Women’s U21 Pan American Cup

Trojan rising sophomore participates in first international competition

LA PAZ, Mexico – Little Rock setter Sophia Reynolds is preparing to return to Little Rock and the United States after spending the past six weeks training and playing in Mexico at the Women's U21 Pan American Cup, guiding the Dominican Republic to an eighth-place finish.

With her mother a native Dominican and herself holding dual citizenship in the Dominican Republic and the United States, Reynolds is eligible to represent the Dominican. She headed to Mexico on May 4 and was one of only 20 women invited to train and compete for a roster spot. Reynolds was asked to join the team and compete for the Dominican Republic, getting offered one of the 12 roster spots available.

Over the course of a week's worth of action, Reynolds played in four matches with 13 total sets played and four sets started. She registered 15 kills, nine digs, four assists and compiled a .150 hitting percentage.

In the June 7 match against Puerto Rico, Reynolds posted a .263 hitting percentage as she put down 10 kills, hit .263 and recorded six digs in a 3-2 loss where three of the five sets required extra points.

Reynolds led the team with four assists while putting down three kills, posting one block, recording two digs and hitting .250 in the Dominican Republic's 3-0 sweep of Costa Rica on June 10. She also saw action in a 3-0 loss to Cuba on June 9 and a 3-0 loss to Canada on June 11.

The United States won the tournament with a 3-1 championship match decision over runner-up Argentina. All matches were played at Arena La Paz on the Baja California Sur peninsula in La Paz, Mexico.

"I was asked to play out of the 20 girls invited to training which was pretty cool," Reynolds said of her experience. "The tournament was really fun, and I enjoyed being able to watch USA play because I knew a lot of the girls on that team."

Reynolds is now preparing to return to Little Rock where she will lead a young Trojans team into a new conference. Little Rock is set to officially join the Ohio Valley Conference on July 1.

Little Rock Volleyball season tickets will be going on sale soon with a 2022 schedule announcement also expected in the next few weeks.
