Newby Breaks 15-Year-Old School Record in 800m, Claims Gold at Washburn Open

DeRousselle improves upon 60m hurdles time

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Breaking a 15-year-old school record and posting the fastest 800m time by an OVC runner in three years, Nicholas Newby claimed gold as action wrapped up at the Washburn Open Saturday.

Newby's time of 1:51.03 tops Vladimir Findra's mark of 1:51.08 set back in 2008 for the fastest time in school history. It also is the fastest 800m time an Ohio Valley Conference runner has posted since 2020 as Newby vaults into the conference lead in the event.

Andrew Payton, who finished fifth in the race, posted the seventh-fastest time in school history by running 1:53.80.

Cogan DeRousselle improved upon his own 60m hurdles time, clocking 8.10 in the prelims for the second-fastest time in school history. He would finish fifth in the finals, posting a time of 8.15.

Juan Garza ran 48.1 in the 400m to finish sixth at the meet, racing to the fourth-fastest time in school history while Frankie Grey's mark of 48.45 registers as the eighth-fastest in school history as he finished ninth.

Taveion Neal sprinted the 60m dash in 6.80 in the finals to finish fourth at the meet as he moves up to third on the OVC's performance list this season. That gives the Trojans the top three sprinters in the OVC with less than a month until the OVC Indoor Championships.

On the women's side, Takia Palmer clocked 7.70 in the 60m dash prelims to post the fifth-fastest time in school history as she advanced to the finals. Later in the day, she ran 7.76 to place sixth overall.

Alexia Allen's time of 9.55 placed her 12th at the meet and registers as the sixth-fastest in school history.

A throw of 41-4.25 by Allison Stigarll in the shot put placed her ninth while recording the ninth-best mark in school history.

Brenna Harris cleared 5-1.75 (1.57m) in the high jump to finish seventh while Brooklyn Marcee also finished seventh, clearing 11-10.5 (3.62m) in the pole vault.

Little Rock will return to Kansas on Feb. 10-11 for the Gorilla Classic hosted by Pittsburg State while select student-athletes remain in the Natural State for the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 11.
