NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Little Rock track and field is off to a strong start, turning in several standout performances at its first indoor meet of the season. Multiple Trojans placed inside the top three of their events, led by freshman
Jeremiah Patton's runner-up finish in the 60 meters.
The Vanderbilt Commodore Challenge featured a highly competitive field that included programs from across the region, including three Southeastern Conference teams.
Patton paced the Trojan men with a second-place finish in the 60 meters, clocking a time of 6.69 in his collegiate debut. The freshman impressed in his first race but said he is striving for even more.
"Great season opener. But I still have a couple areas I can improve on so my race can become a lot smoother," Patton said.
Senior
Deshawn Roberts also started his season strong, placing third in the high jump with a mark of 2.05 meters. Freshman
Colter Maya added a top-10 finish in the 300 meters, an encouraging performance in a race loaded with SEC talent.
On the women's side, senior
Ragen Hodge opened her season on a high note by finishing third in the high jump at 1.70 meters. Freshman
Maddie Cottier also impressed in her first collegiate 1,000 meters, placing third with a time of 2:57.39.
"We learned a lot about ourselves on this trip," said head coach
J.P. Behnke. "As expected, we had several kids achieve personal bests, but overall, I think we have a lot of room for improvement. We'll take what we learned today and be better at Missouri next month."
The Trojans now head into winter break before returning to action next month. Little Rock will travel to Columbia, Missouri, for the Bob Teel Invitational on Jan. 24.
