Trojans head south for weekend series at Nicholls

Little Rock Baseball will try its hand on the road for the first time this season when the Trojans (3-0) open a three-game series Friday at Nicholls State (2-2) in Thibodaux, La. The series – originally scheduled for one game on each Friday, Saturday and Sunday – has been changed to a single game at 2 pm Friday, and a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 pm from Ray E. Didier Field. There will be no live stream available.

The Trojans were slated to play at Memphis earlier this week but had that game postponed with the arrival of a winter storm that made traveling unsafe. That game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 5 in Memphis. So instead, Little Rock will have had almost a full week of rest when Friday's series begins against the Colonels.

The Trojans are coming off a three-game sweep of Evansville last weekend, where Little Rock topped the Purple Aces by scores of 5-4 and 5-1 in a doubleheader, then 11-1 in an eight-inning run-rule contest Sunday. Jack Cline struck out a career-high 10 batters in the series finale, earning OVC Pitcher of the Week honors for his effort.

Zach Henry hit .545 against Evansville and Ryan Geck hit .538, as the two combined for 13 hits, seven runs scored, and six RBIs. Henry hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the second game, and Geck totaled three doubles over the weekend. Henry also stole three bases for the Trojans. The Little Rock pitching staff totaled 23 strikeouts while surrendering just 13 hits, six runs and seven walks.

Nicholls opened its season with wins of 5-3 and 10-2 over Northern Illinois, but was beaten 21-2 in the series finale. The Colonels lost 5-2 at home to Omaha on Tuesday and a Wednesday contest against LSU was postponed due to weather. Nicholls has yet to play away from home this season.

Little Rock will again start Jackson Wells (0-0, 1.80), Brody Bunting (1-0, 0.00) and Cline (1-0, 1.50) against the rotation of Michael Lindsey (0-0, 1.80), Alec Sparks (1-0, 3.00) and Dalton Hill (0-1, 2.25) for the Colonels.
