Margaritha gains valuable experience competing with DR national team in Mexico

Little Rock senior A'lanae Margaritha had the opportunity of a lifetime this summer, competing for her native Dominican Republic during the NORCECA Pan America Cup in Mexico from July 25, Aug. 2. Margaritha – a middle blocker entering her second year with the Trojans – said the opportunity to represent her country was one she will never forget.

"It's everything to me … it's an unexplainable feeling. Singing my nation's anthem and putting my hand over my chest will always be one of the best feelings," Margaritha said. "Knowing your people back home are supporting you and that you are not just playing for yourself but your family and the entire nation … and carrying your name on your nation's jersey … you're playing for so much more."

Margaritha and the Dominican Republic team won two of three matches during group play, losing only to eventual champion United States. But the DR team swept Costa Rica and Suriname while Margaritha totaled 18 points on 14 attacks, three blocks and one service ace during the three matches.

The Dominican Republic fell to Canada, 3-2 in the quarterfinals, but bounced back to sweep Suriname again before dispatching Nicaragua in straight sets to finish fifth overall in the competition.

"I wanted to push my limits and my mental toughness during this tournament, so that I can carry that into this season at Little Rock. Being exposed to this level of competition and improving my technical skills and tactical awareness will help me raise my level of play here and help me lead by example on the court."
