Little Rock Competes Through Challenging Conditions at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa – Little Rock made the most of a challenging day at the Drake Relays, as graduate Jordan Smith and juniors Shane Fisher and Devin Stevens competed against a strong field in Iowa.

Weather played a major role in the meet, with the schedule moved up 2.5 hours due to impending conditions. The sudden change impacted several teams, with many athletes unable to arrive in time, resulting in a smaller but still competitive field.

Little Rock was also affected, having limited time to warm up before races compared to a standard competition schedule.

Fisher opened action for the Trojans in the 1500 meters after a late addition to the meet following a week on the waiting list. He finished 11th overall in 4:07.43.

Stevens led the Trojans in the 800 meters, placing sixth overall with a time of 1:52.83.

"Despite the rushed conditions, it was overall a slower race due to wind and travel, but it was still a great opportunity to sharpen up before the conference meet," Stevens said.

Smith closed out the day for Little Rock in the 5000 meters, finishing 11th overall in 15:18.19.

"Rough situation with the meet getting pushed 2.5 hours ahead. We were lucky enough to even make the meet, but it didn't leave much time for settling in and warm-ups. Most of the racing fields had over half the runners not show up, and there was a solid headwind on the last straight," said assistant track and field coach Jordyn Naylon. "It was definitely tough with a good chunk of adversity. Devin had a solid, even race, and Shane and Jordan, despite not having great races, got a short workout after their events. It was tough, but definitely a learning experience."

Full results from the meet can be viewed here.

Little Rock will now take the weekend off before traveling to Dallas for the SMU Invite on May 1-2.
