LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Gary Hogan Field delivered again.
Trailing by five midway through the game, Little Rock erupted for seven runs over the final four innings—including a five-run eighth—to stun Morehead State, 8-5, Saturday afternoon and even the Ohio Valley Conference series.
"Gary Hogan Field magic," head coach
Chris Curry said. "That was one of my favorite wins because we've been in a storm since Lindenwood. I challenged this team to respond, and they've done that every weekend. That's what they did tonight."
The Trojans (27-20, 13-7 OVC) looked in trouble early as Morehead State built a 5-0 lead behind a three-run fourth and two more in the fifth.
But Little Rock never flinched.
Nico Baumbach helped ignite the comeback in the fifth, scoring the Trojans' first run before
Jerdy Lopez added a sacrifice fly and
Trey Hill came home on a groundout to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Trojans chipped away again in the seventh when
Cooper Chaplain drove in Baumbach to make it 5-3, setting the stage for a decisive eighth inning.
That's when everything broke loose.
Baumbach delivered the biggest swing of the day to that point, ripping a two-run double to right to tie the game. Moments later, Hill launched a two-run homer to left-center—his second of the season - to put Little Rock in front for good.
Kade Smith followed with an RBI triple to cap the five-run surge and push the lead to 8-5.
"Nico started the rally and Trey finished it," Curry said. "Everybody will talk about Trey's swing, but his defense changed the game -the throw, the block, the pickoff. That was huge."
Hill finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Baumbach went a perfect 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and two RBIs to pace the offense.
"I think we were feeling it a little bit the last few games," Baumbach said. "The pitchers have been carrying us. Once we got that first hit, it just kind of opened everything up."
"It just takes one spark," Hill added. "We know how good we are. Once it gets going, it goes."
Little Rock's bullpen made sure the comeback held.
Josh Beezley stabilized things with two scoreless innings before
Isaac Evaniew earned the win with two shutout frames.
Tag Andrews closed the door in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
The Trojans' resilience—something Curry has preached since the first team meeting—showed once again.
"I can't think of two guys I'd rather have up in a big moment than
Trey Hill and
Nico Baumbach," Curry said. "They've been through everything, never complained, never brought bad energy. They're winners."
Little Rock will look to carry the momentum into Sunday's rubber game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Gary Hogan Field.
