Hilltoppers Blank Trojans In Series Opener, 3-0

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ? Western Kentucky freshman Bart Carter threw a three-hit complete game shutout on Friday night to lead the Hilltoppers (17-23, 9-10) to a 3-0 win over the UALR baseball team (17-24, 5-12).

Carter improved to 5-3 on the year by scattering three hits and two walks over 9.0 innings, while striking out seven Trojans en route to his first complete game. UALR junior David Klumpp (3-4) had a solid outing as well, allowing seven hits, one walk and three runs while striking out seven, but took the loss after receiving zero run support.

WKU broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fourth as Casey Hamilton (hit by pitch) and Scotty Colt (walk) reached base with two outs on the board. Wade Gaynor followed with a base knock through the left side to put the Hilltoppers ahead 1-0.

The Toppers tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh, after Colt led off the frame with a double. Colt made it a 2-0 game when he scored on a throwing error, and Troy Frazier increased WKU's lead to three runs with an infield single.

Senior Tyler Mason accounted for two of UALR's three hits in the losing effort, with freshman Brad Swiderski tallying the other hit. The Trojans only threatened once on the night, using a pair of walks and a wild pitch to put runners in scoring position in the top of the eighth, but Carter got a groundout to end the threat and preserve the shutout.

The two teams return to action tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch at Nick Denes Field slated for 3 p.m.
