Box Score ARLINGTON, Texas ? The 2008 season did not begin the way the UALR baseball team had hoped on Friday, as UT Arlington edged the Trojans in a 1-0 pitcher's duel on the opening day of the UTA-Dallas Baptist Invitational. UTA's Nathan Long (1-0) threw a complete-game shutout for the Mavericks, scattering three hits and a walk over 9.0 scoreless innings.
UALR senior David Klumpp (0-1) allowed just one run to the Mavs over 6.1 innings, but took the loss after receiving zero run support. Senior Levi Laughlin closed out the game for UALR with 1.2 scoreless innings.
UTA scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, when Jay Pitschka doubled and came around to score on a RBI single by Michael Choice. A freshman outfielder, Choice led all players with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
The Trojans managed only three hits on the day, compliments of senior Robert Taylor, sophomore Brad Swiderski and junior Kody Kroll.
UALR returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. game against Dallas Baptist.
