Box Score 2 ARLINGTON, Texas ? The UALR baseball team (0-4) dropped a pair of games on the final day of the UT Arlington-Dallas Baptist Invitational on Sunday at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Trojans allowed seven runs in the top of the ninth in a 14-8 loss to Missouri State (3-0), then managed just three hits in an 11-1 loss to UT Arlington (2-2).
UALR returns to action Tuesday, when it welcomes Southern Arkansas to Gary Hogan Field at 3 p.m. for the team's 2008 home opener.
The Trojans took a 6-5 lead into the eighth inning of their contest with Missouri State, but the Bears reclaimed the lead with two runs in the eighth and tacked on seven runs in the top of the ninth to move to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Missouri State racked up 15 hits and six stolen bases in the win, led by a 4-for-5 effort from outfielder Ben Woodbury, who was one of four players to drive in two runs. Reliever Cody Aycock (1-0) was credited with the win, while Tyler Ryun picked up a save by working the final 1.2 innings.
UALR got a solid outing from junior Clay Rominger, who held the Bears to four hits and a run over 4.1 innings, after coming on in relief of starter Adam Champion. A 6-7 right hander, Champion allowed five runs, six hits and three walks over 3.0 innings pitched.
Juniors Matt Apfel and Eric Hanlon led the Trojans with two hits a piece, with Apfel driving in a team-high two runs.
UTA's Matthew Otteman (1-0) scattered three hits and two walks over 7.0 innings in UALR's second game of the day, holding the Trojans to one unearned run as the Mavericks picked up an 11-1 victory.
The Mavericks plated six runs in the bottom of the third, which proved to be more than enough run support for Otteman. It was the second win of the weekend for UTA over the Trojans, as Nathan Long threw a three-hit, complete-game shutout in a 1-0 victory on Friday.
UTA leadoff hitter Michael Choice accounted for four of the team's 13 hits in the win, going 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and a solo homer.
Senior Nathan Parker (0-1) took the loss for the Trojans after giving up 10 hits and eight runs (seven earned) over 5.0 innings.
