Box Score OXFORD, Miss. ? The UALR Trojans baseball team (4-13) dropped the lone game of their series against #8 Ole Miss (14-6) by a 12-5 score. Nick DeSanctis led the Trojans in the game with a 3-for-4 performance with two runs scored.
After a scoreless first inning, the Trojans jumped on the Rebels in the top of the second for three runs. Robert Taylor singled up the middle and scored on a home run by Brad Swiderski. DeSanctis had his first single of the day and later advanced to third after Pat Young reached on a fielder's choice and error. DeSanctis was brought in by Zach Rowles as the Trojans took an early 3-0 lead.
The Rebels answered in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Smith led the Rebel charge, advancing to first after being hit by a pitch from Trojan starter Adam Champion. After a double by Michael Guerrero, Kevin Mills brought Smith home with a groundout to the shortstop. Guerrero scored on sacrifice fly by Jeremy Travis.
Ole Miss continued the barrage in the bottom of the third as the Rebels scored five runs. Cody Overbeck did the most damage in the inning, hitting a three-run home run that put Ole Miss ahead for good. Travis had a double in the inning as well to score two more Rebels, putting Ole Miss up 7-3.
The Trojans attempted a rally in the top of the fifth. Eric Hanlon started the inning with a single up the middle. He was brought in with a single by Kody Kroll, but that was the end of the Trojans' scoring in the inning.
The Trojans added another run in the top of the ninth, but it was too little as they fell to Ole Miss by seven runs.
DeSanctis and Swiderski provided most of the offense for the Trojans. Swiderski's home run was his fourth of the season.
Champion picked up the loss for the Trojans, going two and a third innings in the loss. The Trojan bullpen pitched the rest of the way, getting six strikeouts for the game.
The Trojans return to action this weekend for a Sun Belt Conference home series with the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. The first game at Gary Hogan Field has a scheduled start time of 6:30 p.m.
